Mrs. Alice Van Dyke, age 100, of Orange City, formerly of Hospers, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Sunday, June 5, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Monday, June 6, at 10:30am, at the Trinity Reformed Church Hospers Campus with the Rev. Milton Sikkema and the Rev. Kurt Bush officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hospers Cemetery near Hospers.

Alice Johanna was born on March 25, 1922, on her family’s farm near Boyden, the daughter of Andrew and Gertrude (Ver Meer) Vander Maten. She grew up on the farm and attended Capel #6 County School through the eighth grade.

She was united in marriage to Raymond G. Van Dyke on February 1, 1946, in Middleburg. They first made their home at Fort Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, where Ray served in the United States Army and Alice worked on the base. Following Ray’s honorable discharge, they settled on a farm near Hospers, where they raised their family. In 1988, they moved to a home in Hospers. Ray passed away on April 1, 2002, in Orange City, after more than 56 years of marriage. Alice later moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in 2021, she became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Mrs. Van Dyke was a member of the First Reformed Church of Hospers for over seventy years, where she was able to use her musical talents as an organist and pianist, playing for countless church functions. She also played for many music contests and programs, as well as her own children and numerous local vocalists.

Alice worked as a nurse’s aid in Orange City for a short time, but as her family grew, she stayed on the farm, helping Ray and teaching piano lessons. She enjoyed horses and belonged to the local saddle club and did outings in covered wagons. When her children were young, she participated in their 4H activities, and she helped organize their neighborhood picnics. She and Ray loved to travel as a family, and they had the privilege of visiting Europe twice, the Hawaiian Islands, and many places across the United States. Alice was an avid sports fan and rarely missed a Northwestern College or MOC-Floyd Valley basketball, baseball, or volleyball game. She also liked watching or listening to the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. It wasn’t unusual for her to have two different games on at the same time.

For Alice’s 100th birthday, she was able to travel to Naples, Florida, with two of her granddaughters, where they spent the week on boat rides, holding an alligator, and “glamping” with Randy and Judy.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Ramona and Brian Garvey, of Hospers; Bonita and Fred Kramer, of Sheldon; and Randall and Judy Van Dyke, of Spencer; a daughter-in-law, Kim Van Dyke, of Kansas City, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Nic Kramer, and his wife, Heidi; Josh Kramer, and his wife, Mandi; Matt Kramer; Mike Kramer; Angie Heikens and Nathan Tschopp; Amy, and her husband, Wes Simpson; Ashley, and her husband, Sam West; Sarah Breyette; Amanda Boneschans; Chandler, and her husband, Raoul Santiago; and Jordan, and her husband, Jake Chambers; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joann Schouten, Edna Kiel, and Adeline Dolphin; and a brother, Willis Vander Maten; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Van Dyke; a grandson, Dustin Kramer; a sister and her husband, Greta and Donald Foreman; a sister-in-law, Arnola Vander Maten; and four brothers-in-law, Melvin Schouten, Ray Kiel, Dave De Boer, and Audley Dolphin.

Memorials will be given to the family for the purchase of a print for the Pioneer Memorial Home.
