Mrs. Harriet Van Leeuwen-Hoekstra, age 87, of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, July 15, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Hull Protestant Reformed Church in Hull. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, July 16, at 11:00am, at the church with the Rev. James Laning officiating. Interment will follow services in Visalia California, at the Visalia Public Cemetery. The Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is in charge of arrangements.

Harriet Ann was born on December 29, 1934, in Hawarden, the daughter of Otto and Lena (Van Ginkel) Heidsma. When she was an infant, her parents moved to Bellflower, California, and at the age of nine, the family was involved in a car accident that claimed the lives of her parents and brothers. After recovering from her injuries, she went to live with her grandpa and grandma Van Ginkel in Bellflower, where she graduated from Valley Christian Schools.

On April 15, 1953, she was united in marriage to Jack Van Leeuwen in Bellflower. They first made their home in Bellflower, before moving to Santa Fe Springs, California. They later moved to Chino, California, where they raised their family and operated a dairy. While in Chino they were members of the First Christian Reformed Church, where Harriet participated as a Calvinette leader and helped with vacation bible school. She also volunteered at Ontario Christian School, where she drove bus and was a part of the schools Mother’s Club. After retiring from the dairy, she and Jack moved to Visalia, California, where they were members of the Trinity United Reformed Church and Harriet was a part of the local Red Hat Society. Jack passed away on September 22, 2004, in Visalia, after more than 51 years of marriage.

She was united in marriage to Theodore Hoekstra on December 29, 2008, in Hull. They made their home in Hull, where they were members of the Hull Protestant Reformed Church. She and Ted also spent many winters together in Visalia before moving to Sioux Center in 2019, where they were residents of Crown Pointe Estates.

Harriet was blessed with the gift of hospitality which was evident through her skills in the kitchen, often cooking and baking, and even doing some small catering jobs. She also enjoyed decorating her home, reading cookbooks, and completing crossword puzzles. Most importantly, she demonstrated a deep commitment to her faith and her family.

Survivors include her husband of more than thirteen years, Ted, of Sioux Center; four daughters and their husbands, Leanne and James Bonnecroy, of Orange City; Michelle and George Rispens, of Pixley, California; Jacqueline and Henry Van Maanen, of Doon; and Julie and Hans Wilting, of Meadowbank, Prince Edward Island; nine grandchildren, T.J. Rispens, and his wife, Laura; John Rispens, and his wife, Katie; Jack Bonnecroy; Harrison Van Maanen, and his wife, Stephanie; Samuel Bonnecroy, and his wife, Kylee; Hannah, and her husband, Eric Van Drunen; Louise, and her husband, Nathan Van Peursem; Haley, and her husband, David Van Hal; and Aike Wilting; nine great-grandchildren; and seven step-children and their spouses, Marilyn and Loran Te Grotenhuis and Phyllis and Ike Uittenbogaard, all of Hull; Charles and Kathy Hoekstra, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Peter and LaVonne Hoekstra, of Sioux Center; Tim and Judy Hoekstra, of Chino, California; Everett and Cathy Hoekstra, of Suwannee, Georgia; and Elaine and Kelly Ensz, of Sioux Falls.

In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Hilbert and Dick Heidsma.

Memorials may be given to the Sioux Center Home Health and Hospice.
