Mary was born on November 5, 1925, on a farm near Orange City, the daughter of John and Marie (Huisman) Kiel. She attended country school, then Sioux Center Community High School, and then teacher training in Sheldon. She subsequently taught in country schools for a few years.

On February 13, 1947, she married Henry Addink, and they began farming near Sioux Center and then Orange City. She worked as a stay-at-home mother for her seven children, and as they grew up, she continued her strong commitment to children by providing daycare from her home. In their retirement years, Mary and Henry volunteered for the Red Cross. Mary was also active in helping Southeast Asian immigrants adjust to life in Northwest Iowa. Mary and Henry were members of First Christian Reformed Church, where Mary was active in Faith, Hope, and Love Society.

Throughout her life she had a strong commitment to serve her Lord by doing what was right, along with the knowledge that she was saved by grace. She maintained a sense of awe, marveling at the intricacies of the world God created. She loved to read and compiled her favorite sayings into a book, Treasury of Gems.
