From the Rock Valley Bee, June 20, 1941:

Old Settler Is Called Beyond

Charles Gayer, Sr., Fred Gayer, their sister Mrs. Fred Klein, and John Ranschau were at Mitchell, S.D., Tuesday to attend the funeral of the late David Rumbolz, 89, who came to this country in 1886 on the same ship, the Eider, on which the Gayer family sailed for this country. That was 55 years ago. He came with his uncle and worked in this vicinity for several years before locating on a homestead on North Dakota where he prospered.

After his wife died on Thanksgiving day, 1918, he went to live with his brother and wife and stayed with them until they, too, passed on, when he went to Ethan, S.D., to make his home with his niece, Mrs. Schumacher.

Funeral services were held in Zion Lutheran church in Mitchell, S.D., at 9:30 A.M. Tuesday, and burial was in a country church yard 10 miles south of Mt. Vernon, S.D.

Mr. Rumholz came from the same province in Germany as the Gayer family, near the Swiss border, as well as the Miller, Younker, Bauder, Studer and other families who have become prominent citizens of this locality. He was highly thought of by all who knew him.
