Obituaries -- Hendrik Plakke

Hendrik Plakke, 88, an inmate of the County Home died Wednesday, Dec. 13 in a local hospital of an incurable disease. Funeral services were held in the Van Etten Funeral Home with Rev. Mr. H. Colenbrander officiating, Dec. 15.

Mr. Plakke was born in Wunspeet, The Netherlands and came to the United States in 1904. He lived at Sioux Center and Orange City. In February, 1915 he was married to Mrs. Henderika Pluim, who died some years ago.

Henry Plakke Succumbs

After an illness of several weeks duration, Mr. Henry Plakke an inmate at the county home, passed away at the De Bey hospital last Thursday. Brief funeral services were held at the Van Etten funeral home Friday afternoon.

Mr. Plakke was born in the Netherlands but came to this country many years ago to live in this vicinity where he made many friends. He had reached the age of 87 years. Mr. B. Grevenhof (cousin of deceased) and family of Bigelow, Minn., attended the funeral.

HENDRIK PLAKKE

Wednesday, 13 Dec., Mr. Hendrik Plakke died in the De Bey hospital after a short illness of one week with cancer, at the age of 88 years.

The deceased was born in 1851 at Nunspeet, Netherlands, and came to America about 35 years ago, and settled in Sioux County. At first he worked for quite some time in Sioux Center, then later came to Orange City. For the greater part of his life he worked as a day laborer.

On 24 February 1915, in Alton, he married Mrs. Hendrika Pluim, who preceded him in death some years ago. For some years he lived alone north of Orange City, but because of his advanced age he had resided for the last two years in the County Home.

The funeral took place Friday from the Van Etten funeral home, under direction of Rev, H. Colenbrander, of whose congregation the deceased was a member, and burial took place at the Orange City cemetery.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as Hendrik Plakhe, b. 1851, d. 1939, West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City. His FindaGrave.com page has no additional data, but does include a photo of his headstone (Hendrik Plakke, 1851-1939).

His death certificate has him as Henry Plakke, a County Home inmate; born April 2, 1851 in the Netherlands; parents not recorded in the County Home records; divorced; died in the De Bey Hospital, Orange City, at 7:15 p.m. December 13, 1939; cause, cancer of rectum, onset Feb. 1939?, and arteriosclerotic heart disease; an autopsy was done.

The 1930 U.S. census shows Henry Plakke, age 76, widowed, age at first marriage 61, farming in Holland Township, Sioux County; owns his home, worth $3000; immigrated in 1890, naturalized.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1914/1915 has groom Hendrik Plakke, age 54, resident of Orange City, a farmer, born in the Netherlands, parents Lubbert Plakke and Hendrikje Vinke, first marriage; bride Hendrina Pluim, age 59, resident of Alton, Iowa, born in the Netherlands, parents Gerrit Tyese and Maartje Van Beck, second marriage; married in Alton February 24, 1915.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Hendrik Plakke; parents Lubbert Plakke, age 30, a day laborer, and Hendrikje Vinke, age 31; born in Nunspeet 15 April 1854.

From the Alton Democrat, October 25, 1929, Court House news: Hendrik Plakke of Orange City asks a divorce from Hendrina Plakke stating they were married at Alton on February 24, 1915 and lived together until June 1, the same year when he alleges defendant deserted his home.
