Mrs. G. Overman Dies In Sheldon Home

Mrs. G. Overman, for thirty years a Sioux Center resident, passed away Tuesday night in the Sheldon home, following a siege of pneumonia.

Mrs. Overman was for thirty years a resident of Sioux Center where her husband Mr. G. Overman operated a tailor shop. Three years ago the couple retired to the Sheldon home.

Funeral services will be held Friday, at 2 p.m. from the Holland home at Sheldon, Rev. Gene Vis officiating.

Hendrika Jansen was born Dec. 29, 1867 at Providence, Gelderland. She was married March 2, 1889 at Wilp, Holland to G. Overman. Seven children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. Survivors include the widower, Joe of LeMars, Teunis of Rock Valley, Gertie, Mrs. Albert Dykema, Bigelow, Henrietta, Mrs. W. J. McAlpine of Sheldon, 30 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Her death certificate has Mrs. Gerrit W. Overman; born Dec. 29, 1867 in Providence [Province?] Gelderland, Netherlands; father’s surname Jansen, mother’s name unknown to the informant, Henrietta McAlpine; 33 years in the United States; died at the Holland Home for the Aged, Sheldon, where she had lived 3 years, at 4:05 p. m. January 23, 1940; cause, bronchial pneumonia, duration 2 days, due to flu, duration 4 days; buried in Sheldon Cemetery.

Her FindaGrave.com page has Hendrika Jansen Overman, 1867-1940; buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Sheldon; spouse Gerrit W. Overman (1864-1952).

WieWasWie.nl has a marriage index record for groom Gerrit Willem Overman, age 24, a tailor, parents Jakobus Overman and Janna Veldhoen; bride Hendrika Jansen, age 21, a maidservant, parents Teunis Jansen and Hendrika Kruitbosch, both day-laborers; married 2 March 1889 in Voorst, Gelderland.

The 1910 U.S. census for Sioux Center shows Gerrit W. Overman, age 46, a tailor, working out; wife Hendricka, age 42; and daughters Gerritje (16), a laborer working out, and Henrietta (13). All immigrated in 1906; none are naturalized; the parents speak Dutch, the daughters speak English and are attending school.
