From the Alton Democrat, January 19, 1940:

Former Alton Man Passes At Van Nuys, Cal.

Peter Schaul, age 50, died at a Van Nuys, Calif. Hospital Sunday at noon, according to a message received by his mother, Mrs. Matt. Kellen of Alton. The family here had learned of his illness following a paralytic stroke, from which he did not rally.

Mr. Schaul was born in the Alton vicinity. He was a World war veteran and since the war has lived at Van Nuys where he was proprietor of a recreation parlor, and owned other real estate.

He is survived by his wife, his mother and three sisters: Sister M. Marguerite of Stacyville, Iowa; Miss Mary Schaul and Mrs. Chris Gerst of Alton. Alton friends greatly regret his passing.

The California Death Index on Ancestry.com has Peter G. Schaul, born 12 Feb 1889 in Iowa, died 14 Jan 1940 in Los Angeles.

His FindaGrave.com page adds his birth place as Alton, Iowa; buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery; parents Andreas Schaul (1858-1901) and Mathilda Catherine Weis Kellen (1869-1942); four sisters and one half-sister listed.

The Application for Headstone submitted by the Veterans Administration Facility in Los Angeles shows him as Peter G. Schaul, private, Quartermaster Corps; enlisted July 26, 1918; discharged June 7, 1919.

The U.S. Veterans Administration Master Index gives his full name as Peter Gregor Schaul, birth date 12 March 1889, military date 2 Jun 1919, residence Alton, Iowa.

The 1930 U.S. census for Los Angeles shows him as Peter G. Scheaul, age 41, single, owns his home worth $4000, proprietor of a pool room.

The Van Nuys city directory for 1939 has Schaul, Peter G. (Ethel; Van Nuys Recreation Parlor) h 14220 Valerio. (The Parlor’s entry in the city directory shows it offering billiards and snooker, cigars, cigarettes and tobacco.)
