From the Sioux County Capital, November 9, 1939, Rock Valley news:

Word was received here by Sam Buffington of the death of A. J. Buffington of Pipestone, Minn., a relative, who formerly lived here.

There are a couple of very brief death notices in De Volksvriend, one of which calls him “Andy.” There are no extant Rock Valley newspapers for this time period.

From the Pipestone (Minn.) Leader, November 3, 1939:

Rites Held for Mr. Buffington – Long Time Resident of Pipestone County Dies Monday at Hospital

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at the farm home near Holland and at 2:00 o’clock here at the Presbyterian church for A. J. Buffington, long time resident of Pipestone county, whose death occurred Monday night at the Ashton Memorial hospital. Mr. Buffington had been ill for some time suffering with a heart ailment. He entered the hospital here in September and was a patient about a month and returned here Saturday to receive treatment.

The Rev. P. L. Smith, pastor of the church, conducted the services. Mrs. E. E. Beede and Miss Mary Brown sang two hymns, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Rock of Ages.” Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery. Henry Brecker, John Quinn, Herman Meir, Ed Beyers, LeRoy Satter and Fred Wittfoth acted as pallbearers.

Andrew Jackson Buffington was born May 11, 1863 at Pella, Iowa. He was united iin marriage March 2, 1892, to Sarah Ethel Stengel, The couple moved to Minnesota in February 1914, and lived on a farm near Hatfield about seven years. In 1921 they moved to a farm near Holland and he has since made his home here.

He was preceded in death by his wife whose death occurred about six years ago. He is survived by twelve children, Simon and Donald Buffington, Mrs. Gladys Ripley, Mrs. Flossie Kirby and Mrs. Vera Arrowsmith all of Pipestone; Mrs. Rose Oakland, Canton, S. Dak.; Mrs. Hazel Buckholz, Harold, Clarence and Louis Buffington, Mrs. Faye Beyers and Mrs. Archie Whitker all of Holland; three brothers, Samuel of Rock Valley, Iowa, Frank of Luverne and Simon of Holland; and two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Van Daalen of Trent, S. Dak., and Mrs. Chris Stengel of Beresford, S. Dak. There are also 47 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Minnesota death certificate 1939-MN-012188 (informant Louis Buffington) has Andrew Jackson Buffington, usual residence Holland, Minn.; born May 11, 1864 in Pella, Iowa; parents Samuel Buffington, born in Kentucky, and Mary Autry, born in Pennsylvania; widowed, wife Sara Ethel Stengel; occupation, general farmer, own farm, last worked April 1939; died in Ashton Memorial Hospital, Pipestone, at 7:10 p.m. October 30, 1939; cause, myocardial insufficiency, duration 4 months; contributory causes, mitral stenosis resulting from rheumatic endocarditis, duration 40 years; buried in Pipestone Cemetery.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his birth date as 11 May 1864 and death date as 28 Oct 1939; buried in Old Woodlawn Cemetery, Pipestone. Parents Samuel Wesley Buffington (1838-1913) and Mary Awtry Buffington (1837-1913). Wife Sarah Ethel Buffington (1869-1932, married 1892). Eight siblings and twelve children listed.

The 1885 Iowa state census shows Samuel and Mary Buffington and their family, including 19-year-old Andrew, living in Center Township, Sioux County. The 1900 U.S. census shows the A. J. Buffington family renting a farm in Sioux Township, Sioux County. In 1910 they were renting a farm in Rock Township, Sioux County. By 1920 they had moved to a rented farm in Gray Township, Pipestone County, Minn.
