Nelvina Joyce, the daughter of Ben and Lucy (De Vries) Fedders, was born on July 31, 1931, on a farm northwest of Orange City. Her parents later moved to a farm near Carnes, where she grew up and attended the Orange City Christian School.

On January 31, 1950, she was united in marriage to Glenn Orlin De Haan at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The couple made their home in Boyden, Alton, and Orange City, before settling on their farm near Carnes. In 1981, they moved into Orange City, where Glenn passed away on October 19, 2010. A few years later, Nelvina moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, and in July of 2018, she became a resident of Prairie Ridge.

Nelvina liked spending time in her garden and tending to her many flower beds as well as playing card games, especially Hand and Foot and Pinochle. In earlier years, she and Glenn enjoyed exploring the country with their camper and spent many years wintering in Texas. She cherished the moments she had with her family and blessed each of her grandchildren with an afghan and pillow that she made.

Mrs. De Haan was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she had been a part of the Mary Martha Circle, and passed away on the church’s 150th anniversary. She had also been active in the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the Hands Around the World store in Orange City.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Harlan and Phyllis De Haan, of Orange City, Linda and Gene Gaumnitz, of Le Mars, and Nora and Marc Van Peursem, and Evan and Pam De Haan, all of Alton; ten grandchildren, Heather (Chad) Walth, Heidi (Billy) Burzlaff, Penny (Dr. Chris) Rott, Bruce (Alyssa) De Haan, Tiffany (Jarrod) Kayser, Nichole (Jeff) Gibson, Sara Van Peursem (fiancé Seth Hupp), Jessica (Jason) Williams, Christopher (Alisha) De Haan, and Anthony (Krystle) De Haan; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Jeanette and Ernest Wielenga, of Sioux Center; two brothers and their wives, Mike and Audrey Fedders, of George, and Bernie and Irma Fedders, of Orange City; a brother-in-law and his wife, Rog and Dianne De Haan; and a sister-in-law, Leora De Haan, all of Orange City.
