From the Sioux County Capital, July 27, 1939:

Hodick Henderson was born April 15, 1868, in Tenspur, Norway and died Monday July 17 in the hospital in Le Mars following a prolonged illness of over two years, diabetes and complications being the cause of his death.

He was a resident of Rock Valley for forty-six years, and before that had lived for ten years at Calmar, Iowa and twelve years at Hull. He was a mason by trade, and had practiced that trade with his brother Wm. all the time he lived here.

He leaves one sister, Mrs. Lee Shutter of Burtrum, Minnesota and two brothers, Alfred of Worthington, Minn. and Wm. with whom he made his home here.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home with Rev. Mr. J. A. Kettle officiating, and burial was made in the local cemetery.

Hodick Henderson Taken By Death

Hodick Henderson, a resident of Rock Valley for the past forty-six years, dued in the Le Mars hospital Monday afternoon at five o’clock, following a lingering illness of about two years. He had been confined to the hospital for the past twelve weeks.

Mr. Henderson was born in Tenspur, Norway, April 15, 1868, and came with his parents to this country when he was two years old. They lived at Calmar, Iowa, for ten years, then moved to Hull, living there for twelve years. From Hull, Mr. Henderson came to Rock Valley where he spent the rest of his life, with the exception of the time he was in the hospital.

Mr. Henderson was a mason by trade and was a hardworking man as long as he was able to work, and he had a part in building many of the houses in town and farm buildings in the country.

He leaves one sister, Mrs. Lee Shutter, of Burtrum, Minn., and two brothers, Alfred, of Worthington, Minn., and Will of Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held in Rock Valley Wednesday afternoon, July 19, with Rev. Kettle of the Methodist church in charge and the remains were taken to the Valley View Cemetery.

His death certificate (indexed on Ancestry.com as Hadick Henderson) gives his birth date as Aug. 15, 1868, Tenspur, Norway; parents John Henderson, born in Sweden, and Annie Samson, born in Tenspur, Norway; single; worked as a mason, cement work, until March 1937; died in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Le Mars, at 5 p.m. July 17, 1939; causes: coronary thrombosis, onset 1-4-39, nephritis, onset 3-15-39, and gangrene of legs; contributory cause, alcoholism.

His FindaGrave.com page also gives his birth date as 15 Aug 1868 in Norway; parents John Henderson (1838-1916) and Anie[Annie] Henderson (1838-1901). Three siblings listed: Lena Sophia Henderson Shutter (1872-1946), Alfred Julius Henderson (1874-1944), and William Henderson (1877-1957). There is a photo of his headstone (“Hodick Aug. 15, 1868 – July 17, 1939”)

The 1900 U.S. census shows John Henderson (63, widowed), sons Engle[?] (34), Hoddick (30, born Aug. 1869), Alfred (25), and Willie (19) and daughter Mary (19) living in Rock Valley. John, Engle, and Hoddick immigrated from Norway in 1864[?!] and are naturalized. The 1910 census shows John and Hoddick emigrating in 1870.
