From the Sioux Center News, November 13, 1974:

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Riepma and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Riepma went to a funeral in Yankton Friday of Jake Boerema. Mr. Boerema was married to Alice Riepma, a sister of Ted and Wilson. She died several years ago.

From the Sioux City Journal, November 7, 1874:

JAKE BOEREMA

MECKLING, S.D. – Jake Boerema, 78, of Meckling, was found dead Nov. 5 in his trailer home here, by a neighbor. Services will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Wagner-Iverson Funeral Home at Vermillion. Burial will be in Yankton Cemetery at Yankton. The Rev. Larry Powell of the Church of the Nazarene will officiate.

Mr. Boerema was born May 30, 1896 in The Netherlands. He married Ella Riepma Oct. 16, 1924 at Castlewood, S.D. She died. He married Elizabeth Stempson Feb. 21, 1941 at Hartington, Neb. She died in 1963. Mr. Boerema farmed, and lived in the Yankton vicinity most of his life. He lived in the Meckling area the last 11 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. James Tichy of Meckling, Mrs. Edna Hensley of Santa Clara, Calif., and Mrs. Edwin Ellis of Yankton; two sons, John of Vermillion and Ike of Boulder Creek, Calif.; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Myron Iverson, the Clay County Coroner, said death was due to natural causes, and occurred Nov. 3.

FindaGrave.com has Jake Boerema, born 30 May 1896 in the Netherlands, died 15 Nov 1974, buried in Yankton City Cemetery, and adds only his first wife, Alice (not Ella) Riepma Boerema (1901-1939). She was a native of Orange City, Sioux County. See her obituary (posted separately) for additional information.

The 1930 U.S. census for Lynn Township, Sioux County shows him and his family living there: Jake Boerma, age 31, married at age 25, born in Holland, immigrated in 1915, naturalized, a farm laborer, renting a home ($15/month); wife Alice, age 28, married at age 22, born in Iowa, parents born in Holland; and children John, age 4-3/12. and Menetta R., age 11/12, both born in South Dakota.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917) shows him as Jouke Boerema, age 21, resident of Rock Rapids, Iowa, born May 30, 1896 in Oldkirk, Holland, has declared intention to become a U.S. citizen, working as a farm laborer for H. L. Popkes; short, slender, blue eyes, light hair.

His World War II draft registration card (April 1942) has him as Jake Boerema, age 45; residence R.F.D. #2 Township 93-55, Yankton County, S.D.; born May 30, 1896 in Niekerk, Holland; self-employed; contact person Elizabeth Boerema, Yankton; height 5’10”, 170 pounds, blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion.
