From the Alton Democrat, March 24, 1939, Ireton news:

Several folks from this community received word of the death of Mrs. Lottie Van Buskirk, life-long resident of Washington township, who died last Friday night in the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Gamble of Sioux City. Mrs. Van Buskirk was 80 years of age last November and had been ailing the past months. About two weeks ago she contracted the flu and pneumonia which resulted in her death.

Funeral services were held from the St. John’s Lutheran church at Craig and burial was made in Craig cemetery. She is survived by five sons: Ira, Hawarden; Frank, William and Seward, all of this vicinity; James and Le Roy of Sioux City, and two daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Benton and Mrs. Gamble, also of Sioux City.

Deceased spent 50 years on a farm southwest of here and was one of the outstanding pioneer mothers. She was born at Davenport and with her husband and family came of a pioneering family.

PIONEER WOMAN DIED FRIDAY
Mrs. Frank Van Buskirk Sr. Passed Away in Sioux City

Mrs. Frank Van Buskirk Sr., a pioneer resident of Preston township, Plymouth county twelve miles southeast of Hawarden, passed away last Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Gamble, in Sioux City, following a lingering illness. In failing health, about a year ago she went to stay with her daughter in Sioux city where she enjoyed the best of care and a comfortable home. Last December she became very weak with an attack of pneumonia and was bedfast until the time of her death.

The body was brought to the Ross Funeral Home in Hawarden and funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Craig Monday afternoon. Interment was in the Craig cemetery.

Lottie Negus was born in Davenport, Iowa, November 16, 1859 and died March 17, 1939 at the advanced age of 79 years, 4 months and 1 day. She grew to young womanhood at Davenport and at the age of 18 was united in marriage there with Frank Van Buskirk. They farmed in Scott county for a time and then operated a farm in Calhoun county for three years before locating in Plymouth county 52 years ago when they settled four miles west of Craig. Mr. Van Buskirk became a prominent and highly successful farmer and stockman but preceded her in death eleven years ago.

She leaves to mourn her loss five sons and two daughters, James LeRoy of Sioux City; Ira of Hawarden; Frank, William and Seward of Craig; Mrs. Sylvia Benton of South Sioux City, Neb., and Mrs. A. J. Gamble of Sioux City. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Jennie Bushlow of Akron; a brother, Frank Negus of Rock Island, Ill.; 23 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Her FindaGrave.com page has Charlotte S. Negus Van Buskirk, born 1859, died 1939, buried in Saint Johns Cemetery, Craig, Plymouth County, Iowa. Spouse Frank P. Van Buskirk (1858-1928, married 1880). Two children listed: William Archie Van Buskirk (1887-1958) and Seward W. Van Buskirk (1900-1981). There is a photo of her headstone.

The marriage register for Scott County, Iowa for 1880/1881 has groom Frank Van Buskirk, age 23, resident of Dixon, Iowa, a farmer, born in Pennsylvania, parents Robert Van Buskirk and Louisa Van Buskirk; bride Lottie S. Negus, age 22, resident of Dixon, Iowa, born in Davenport, Iowa, parents Francis Negus and Sarah Baraby; married Feb. 1, 1881 in Davenport.
