From the Sioux County Capital, March 23, 1939:

G. ORMEL.
G. Ormel, 84, passed away at the the De Bey hospital Tuesday, March 21, at 5 o'clock a.m. from flu and old age complications. Mr. Ormel was born in The Netherlands and upon his arrival in America he settled at Baldwin, Wisconsin. After the death of his wife he came to Sioux county and lived with Jacob Ver Meer and the H. and G. Huitink families. When the Pioneer Home was established at Orange City he took up his residence there. Mr. Ormel was a man with strong christian principles and had a cheerful, friendly disposition.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Pioneer Home at 1:30 o'clock and at 2 o'clock at the First Reformed church with the Rev. Mr. H. Colenbrander officiating. The body will be taken to Baldwin, Wis., for burial

DEATH CALLS GERRIT ORMEL

Gerrit Ormel, a resident of the Pioneer Memorial home for the past 8 years, died Tuesday morning at 5 o’clock. Taken ill with the flu, pneumonia set in and he was moved to a local hospital late Monday afternoon.

He was born December 28, 1854, in the Netherlands, and was also married there. He had lived in Iowa the past 24 years but leaves no close relatives here and little of his history can be learned.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at the home at 1:30 and at the First Reformed church at 2 P.M., with Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment will be made at Baldwin, Wis., where short burial services will be held.

Gerrit Ormel, deceased
The deceased leaves $300.00 to the board of domestic missions and $300.00 to the board of foreign missions of the Reformed Church in America. $1,000.00 to be equally divided between Gerritje Gesink, of Bigelow, Minnesota, and E. J. Bulten, Hendrik Jan Gesink, C. Vreugdenhil, H. W. Brunsveld, G. J. Te Rietstap and Gerrit Colenbrander, all of the Netherlands. The deceased desired to be buried beside his late wife at Baldwin, Wis. To Herman Te Grotenhuis and heirs he bequeathed his personal effects, and to the wife and children of Herman Te Grotenhuis the balance of the estate.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate (personal information supplied by the Pioneer Home) says he is widowed, age 84, birth date unknown 1855 in the Netherlands, parents unknown, a retired farmer; died at 5:30 a.m. March 21, 1939; cause, left lower lobar pneumonia and cardiac insufficiency; contributory cause, senility.

His FiindaGrave.com page shows him born 29 Dec 1853, died 21 Mar 1939, buried in Baldwin Cemetery, St. Croix County, Wisconsin, documented by a photo of his headstone. Also in Baldwin Cemetery is a headstone for “Gertruit wife of G. Ormel, Feb. 18, 1841 – July 10, 1907.”

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index entry for Gerrit Arnold Ormel, parents Hendrik Jan Ormel, age 42, a baker, and Helena Aleida Exo; born 29 Dec 1853 at De Neurne (Aalten), Gelderland.

WieWasWie.nl also has a marriage index record for groom Gerrit Arnold Ormel, age 23, a wooden shoe maker, parents Hendrik Jan Ormel and Helena Aleida Exo; bride Geertruid te Grotenhuis, age 38, parents Hermanus te Grotenhuis, a farmer, and Christina Goris; married 5 July 1877 in Gendringen, Gelderland.

The 1900 U.S. census for Baldwin Township, St. Croix County, Wisconsin has Gerret Ormel, age 48, born Dec. 1851 in Holland, married 23 years, in the U.S. 23 years, first papers taken out, a farmer; wife Gertruida, age 58, born Feb 1842 in Holland, in the U.S. 23 years.

The 1910 census shows him (as Garret Ormel) living in Baldwin village, age 65[!?], widowed, a lodger with Peter G. Peterson and family; immigrated in 1877[?], first papers, working at “odd jobs around town.”

The 1920 census shows him living in West Branch Township, Sioux County as a boarder in the home of Jacob H. Ver Meer and family – age 67, widowed, immigrated in 1881, naturalized in 1908, a laborer on the Ver Meer farm.

By 1930 he is living in the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, age 76, immigrated in 1880, naturalized.
