Boyden Reporter of May 17, 1901
SCMMONED HOME. George Lubbers was born in Holland County, Mich., March 12 1881 and died at Boyden, Iowa, May 12, 1901, aged 20 years and 2 months. George is the eldest son of our worthy townsmen, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph George Lubbers, and removed here from Kansas in 1891 and has since then resided hero. He was a boy of ordinary rugged constitution up to two years ago when he was taken with acute heart disease and several times during this time his life has been despaired of, but superior medical skill and loving care won the victory. While he has been very poorly recently he apparently felt as well as usual Sunday and attended Sunday School in the morning and in the afternoon to church at the Holland church of which he was a member. Here the angel of death breathed upon him and his soul look its flight to his redeemer. George has been an active member of the hardware firm of R. G. Lubbers & Sou since the first of the year. The mother, father, brother and sisters have the deepest sympathy of all our people in their sorrow. We will close this notice with the following tribute handed us by one of his friends: "Among all the sadness in life, there is no greater than to part from a dear one., and especially of one who is just in the bloom of life, with the blossom of manhood upon his head; with all the sweet promises of a noble, pure and Christian life, not only for Christianity but also for the welfare of his community. Such, do I say is indeed sad. We certainly all felt it by the sad occurrence of Sunday afternoon namely: That Mr. George Lubbers, while attending church services, quietly passed away from life below, and another soul was ushered into eternity. Although it was expected by many that it would some day happen, nevertheless it was as yet totally unexpected. The sensation was great and many a tear was shed about the loss of this dear young friend. Mr. George Lubbers was one of the most noted young men of the town and in many respects a good example for all who knew him. He was the oldest of the family; the pride of his mother, the joy of his father, a dear and loving brother to his sisters and brother. In childhood we were playmates, in boyhood we were friends; to manhood ascended, he is gone— and left me behind. O! could I but fly to those worlds beyond this dark grave; And bring back this my friend to linger awhile longer, until I ascend, And rise from beneath life's storm, and its wave.
