Marie M. Hein, 88, a long time resident of Waverly, died Sunday, September 29, at the Oak Park Manor Residential Center in Claremont of natural causes.

She was born on July 27, 1908, in Boyden, the daughter of Klaus and Marie Meyer Reyelts. She was baptized on August 16, 1908 and later confirmed on March 28, 1923.

She attended grade school in Boyden and then attended high school and normal school at Wartburg in Waverly. Marie began teaching elementary school in Boyden, both in English and German.

On June 6, 1935, she married Reverend Herman F. Hein in Boyden. They moved to Olin, where Reverend Hein served his first congregation. In 1940 they moved to Maynard, where he served as pastor until 1945. They then moved to Sheffield where they lived until 1949 when they moved to Denver. Pastor Hein served in Denver until 1952 when poor health force his retirement and the couple moved to Waverly.

In Waverly, Marie began teaching again, this time at the Lutheran Children’s Home (now known as Bremwood) until her retirement in the early 1970s. Reverend Hein died on April 29, 1976 and Marie continued to live in Waverly. In 1994, she moved Coralville to live close to her son, Dr. Herman Hein. She had moved to California four weeks ago to live near her daughter, Karen Green.

Marie was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Waverly.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Dr. Herman and Carol Hein of Coralville, Donald and Judy Hein of Indianapolis, Indiana; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Michael Green of Upland, California; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, October 3 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Dennis H. Dickman officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery, Waverly.
