De Jong, Lois Luverne (Mrs. Peter S.) 1928-2020

Mrs. Lois L. De Jong (Mrs. Peter), age 92, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2020, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a private family funeral service on Thursday, December 31, at the Alton Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Harlan De Jong will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Visitation without the family will be on Wednesday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Lois Luverne, twin sister to Ladene, was born on January 13, 1928, in Orange City, the daughter of Harry and Anna Edna (De Jong) Muilenburg. She was raised on a farm southwest of Maurice and attended the Maurice Elementary and High School. Following her graduation, she attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City for two years.

On June 18, 1948, she married Peter S. De Jong, Jr., in Maurice. They made their home in several different areas before settling in the Orange City area. In addition to being a wife and mother, Lois spent many years working as a bookkeeper. Peter passed away on July 9, 2012, in Orange City, after more than 64 years of marriage.

Lois enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially fishing; working on home renovations; helping her children; and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her five children, Harlan De Jong, and his wife, Glenda; Carol Brooks; Rodney De Jong, and his wife, Viola; Gerald De Jong, and his wife Banj; and Rachael, and her husband, Roger Brunsting; 20 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce Booher, Ladene Altena, and Harriet, and her husband, Roger Harmelink; seven sisters-in-law, Henrietta Muilenburg; Arlene De Jong; Rosemary, and her husband, Norman Te Grotenhuis; Sue De Jong; Delores De Jong; Priscilla, and her husband, Otto Huizenga; and Arlene Menninga; and a brother-in-law, Wilbur De Jong, and his wife, Joan.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Bruce Kuiken and John Brooks; a grandson, Bruce Kuiken, Jr.; a grandson-in-law, Mike Poll; a brother, Wallace Muilenburg; a sister-in-law, Rena, and her husband, Hans Kloosterman; eight brothers-in-law, Claire Booher; Sentner Altena; Raymond De Jong; Julius De Jong; Marion De Jong; Sam De Jong and his wife, Nellie; Marvin De Jong; and Howard Menninga.

Memorials may be directed to Porfirio Rodriguez, a Pan-American missionary that Lois supported.
