Van Peursem, Berdella Henrietta 1949-2020

Ms. Berdella Van Peursem, age 71, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, December 7, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Robert Drenten will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation without the family will be on Sunday, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the funeral home.

Berdella Henrietta was born on July 7, 1949, in Orange City, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Wiersma) Van Peursem. She was raised in Orange City and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she earned her bachelor degree at Calvin College. She then received her master degree from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

She worked with children at Bethany Christian Services, led devotions for the elderly and dying at Holland Home, and worked at Physiotherapy Associates and Center for Independent Living, all in Grand Rapids. She then returned to Orange City in 1998, and in 2005, she moved into the Heritage House Nursing Home and then to the Prairie Ridge Care Center, both in Orange City.

Berdella was a former member of the Hillside Christian Reformed Church and the Providence Christian Reformed Church, both in Grand Rapids, where she was the Sunday School superintendent and a teacher, ladies society leader, and participated in the choir and disabilities committees. More recently, she was a member of the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, and doing counted cross stitch.

Survivors include her brother, Peter Van Peursem, of Orange City; a nephew and his wife, James and Denise Van Peursem, of Evergreen, Colorado; a niece and her husband, Susan and Evan De Weerd, of Orange City; a niece-in-law, Mary Van Peursem, of Rochester, Minnesota; and many great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Phyllis Van Peursem; and a nephew, Michael Van Peursem.
