Alfred “Al” Te Slaa age 85, of Rock Rapids died Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Avera Mc Kennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, from the COVID-19 virus.

Funeral service will be 10:30 Saturday, December 12, 2020, at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA with Rev. Dan Haggar, officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids, IA.

Visitation without the family present will be Friday, December 11th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Alfred Dale Te Slaa was born November 18, 1935, on a farm near Hull, IA, the son of Gerrit and Etta (De Vries) Te Slaa. Al grew up on the family farm and graduated from Hull High School in 1953. After receiving his education, Al started his lifelong career in farming. He was united in marriage to Lenora Dunnick on June 2, 1955 at Hull, IA. Later in life, Al was united in marriage to Phyllis Morlock on March 8, 1997 at Rock Rapids, IA. Al made his home on a farm and moved in 1962 to a farm near Rock Rapids, where he farmed for the next 58 years. Along with crop farming, he fed cattle. He enjoyed attending livestock auctions, spending time with his family and having coffee and visiting with his friends. Over the years he donated over 16 gallons of blood to the Siouxland Blood Bank, was active in the Jaycees and was a member of the Lyon County Cattleman’s Association. He and Phyllis often wintered in Arizona. He enjoyed traveling and traveled to Holland and Alaska along with many other places. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Rock Rapids, IA; his children, Cheryl (Bernard) Hoogland of Longmont, CO; Gary (Barb) Te Slaa of Inwood, IA; Loren (Susie) Te Slaa of Sioux Falls, SD; Kris Hayes and her fiancée, John Lieser of Alexander, MN; his step children, Cindy (Stan) Hulstein of Sioux Falls, SD; Randy (Laurie) Wissink of Eugene, OR; Chris Wissink of Sioux Falls, SD; and Jennifer (Chris) Kipp of Woodinville, WA; 15 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; along with his siblings, Harriett (Les) Morris of Castaic, CA Thelma (Harlan) Ten Haken of Hull, IA; Kenneth Te Slaa of Waverly, IA; and Evey Bakker of Hull, IA.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Gerrit and Etta; toddler brother, John Kenneth Te Slaa; and an infant grandson, Connor Te Slaa.
