Miss Kate Poppen, a young lady of about 20 years of age, started to build a fire with kerosene on Saturday night last, there was an explosion, the flames caught her clothing, resulting in terrible burns from which she died Sunday morning Miss Poppen resided with her father, A. Poppen on his farm five miles west of Sioux Center her mother having died in 1895, so that she was the mainstay of the household. Mr. Poppen was away in Chicago at the time She is well known in Orange City, where her brother Bert, has been a prominent Academy student. The family is grievously stricken over the sad event.
