Born: September 26, 1855
Died: May 31, 1929

John Rohlfs, residing on the 6th Avenue, passed away after a weeks’ sickness on Friday morning, May 31, at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 6 days. He was born September 26, 1855 at Amt Norden, Germany. In his infancy, he was baptized in the triune God and later, having been instructed in the doctrine of the Ev. Lutheran Church was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

In May 1881 he immigrated from the old country and came to America. He made his first residence at Elwood, Iowa, where he lived for four years. From there he moved to Boyden, Iowa where he lived on a farm until 1923, when he retired from active farming and moved to Sheldon, where he had lived since.

In June 1892 he was married to Miss Helena Wormke. Five children were born to this union, two boys and three girls.

The departed was an industrious farmer until he retired from farming and by his untiring work he acquired several farms near Boyden. He was in good health until about last fall when he began to fail, but was still around. About a week ago, he became seriously ill. A physician was called but all care seemed in vain; he grew worse day after day and passed away on Friday morning at 6:30, leaving to mourn his departure, his wife Mrs. Helena “Lena” Rohlfs, two sons, John and Herman, both of Boyden; three daughters, Mrs. George Horn of Boyden and Elsie and Marie of Sheldon; one grandchild; one sister, Mrs. J. Reimers of Boyden; one brother in Germany, and a host of friends. He was a faithful communicant member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, a faithful husband and father.

The funeral took place on Monday afternoon. Services were held at the home and at the Lutheran Church. Interment was made in East Lawn Cemetery.
