Former Janitor Christian School Passes

Tiete De Jong died suddenly at a local hospital Wednesday afternoon, February 16. He had been taken to the hospital for medical care but a heart attack brought his life to a close. He had been making his home with his children at Ireton this winter. Mr. De Jong was janitor of the Christian school for some years.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the First Christian Reformed church here with Rev. Dyk and Rev. R. Bronkema officiating.

On 16 February 1938, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Tiete De Jong, died at the advanced age of 83 years, 8 months and 19 days. We are bereft, but have the comfort that, according to his own testimony he now cheers before the throne of the Lamb in glory.

From De Volksvriend, March 3, 1938 (in Dutch):

Mr. Tiete De Jong, of Ireton, Iowa died in the De Bey hospital here, on 16 February at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 21 days. He was born in St. Anna Parish, Friesland province, Netherlands, on 15 May 1855. In the year 1875 he married Miss Rena Kuipers. To this union were born 9 children, of whom four died as youngsters and the oldest son Peter died in November 1937. Those still alive to mourn his passing are Mrs. Chas. Siegersma of Pease, Minn., Andrew of Estelline, S.D., Fred of East Saugatick, Mich., also 50 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

In the year 1900 the family immigrated to America and settled near Orange City, where they devoted themselves to farming. In November 1918 his first wife died, and in 1920 he married Mrs. Van Duyn, who died 10 years later. The deceased has lived in and near Orange City the entire time, except for the last two years, when he lived at the home of his son Fred in Ireton.

The funeral services were held in Orange City in the First Christian Reformed church, under direction of Rev. R. Bronkema, leader of this church, and Rev. Van Dyke of Ireton. The burial took place at the cemetery here.

Also from De Volksvriend, March 3, 1938, Holland, Mich. news (in Dutch, correspondent unnamed, bur presumably Fred De Jong). Comments relative to the family are:

We are home again after our unexpected and brief visit to Orange City to attend the funeral of my wife’s father Mr. Tietje De Jong. Roland, 22, Ruth Marcia, 14, and Marcia Ruth, 9, accompanied us. We left Orange City in January 1916, and there has been a lot of change. Several friends have asked for our address. We live 8 miles south and 2 west of Holland and 2 miles east of Saugatuck on the New Richmond road.

He does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index, and no FindaGrave record was readily located.

His death certificate gives his deceased wife as Rena DeJong; his birth date as May 26, 1854 in the Netherlands; father Peter DeJong, mother’s name unknown to the informant, Peter De Jong of Ireton; a retired farmer; died at 12:45 p.m. February 16, 1938 at the De Bey Hospital of coronary thrombosis; contributory cause, chronic prostatic[?] hypertha[illegible]; buried in the Orange City Cemetery.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Tiete de Jong, born 25 May 1854 in Het Bildt, Friesland; parents Pieter Tietes de Jong and Sytske Siderius. There is also a marriage index record for groom Tiete de Jong, age 20, born in St. Annaparochie, parents Pieter Tietes de Jong and Sytske Siderius; bride Renske Kuipers, age 22, born in Vrouwenparochie, parents Anne Jogchums Kuipers and Antje Everts Korthuis; married in Het Bildt 24 September 1874.

The Sioux County 1920/1921 marriage register has groom Tietje De Jong, age 67, residence Orange City, a janitor, born in the Netherlands, parents Pieter De Jong and Sietske Siederus, second marriage; bride Antje Van Duin, age 68, residence Orange City, born in the Netherlands, parents Cornelius Vander Lely and Bruine Noorddom, second marriage; married in Orange City 14 July 1920.

The 1900 U.S. census for Orange City (June 1900) shows him as Theodore DeJong, age 46, born May 1954 in the Netherlands, married 25 years, immigrated in 1900, alien, a section hand; wife Reiske, age 48, born Jan. 1852; children Peter (age 21, born Nov. 1878), Ana (18, born Aug. 1881), Frederic (16, born Dec. 1883), Sietske (son, 12, born Nov. 1887), Antje (23, born Nov. 1876, married 2 months) and her husband Tjerk[?] Siemersma (24, born Feb. 1876).

In the 1910 census he is a farmer, naturalized. In 1920, at age 65, widowed, no occupation, he is boarding with Tunis Luymes, a coal house janitor, and his wife and daughter; he was naturalized in 1906 and has no occupation. In 1930, age 76, he is living with wife Aantje, age 70, born in the Netherlands, in a home that he owns, worth $1200.
