Mr. Milo Miesen, of Orange City, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2020, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, with his devoted wife Kay nearby.

There will be a private family memorial mass on Saturday, September 5, 2020, at 10:30am, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. The Rev. Fr. Daniel Greving will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

He is survived by his wife, Kay; his mother-in-law, Margaret Des Camps; his children, Michelle (Craig) Felix, Melissa (Greg) Oolman, Mary McRoy, and Michael (Michelle) Miesen; ten grandchildren, Geoffrey, Olivia, Maria, Nicholas, Hayes, Brayden, Madelynn, Connor, Samantha and Jackson; and two great-grandchildren, Addilyn and Kinsleigh. Having lived until 92, there are many waiting to receive him with games of cards and pool and a fishing pole including his parents, Edward and Katherine; three siblings, Merle, Marvel, and Maurine; father-in-law, John Des Camps; and a grandson, Andrew.

Milo Lloyd was born in 1927 to Edward and Katherine Miesen in Lebanon, South Dakota. He loved sports from a young age and was a small, scrappy guard on his high school basketball team. Following high school, he joined the Army Air Corps. After his service he attended telegraph school and then enjoyed a thirty plus year career as a depot agent with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. While working in Conde, South Dakota, in 1964, he attended a high school baseball game, and the town’s new, young teacher who was taking tickets caught his eye, and in 1965 he and Kay were married. Milo enjoyed early retirement from the railroad and promptly went to work for Standard Office and Mulder Oil Company, both in Orange City, where he presided over Monday morning quarterbacking on all sports.

Many know Milo for his sports enthusiasm, particularly for the Minnesota Vikings, the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, Notre Dame football, and the Minnesota Gophers. In retirement, he and Kay avidly supported MOC-Floyd Valley and Northwestern College basketball and value the friendships they formed over those games.

Milo was proud of his 42 years of sobriety. He loved chocolate, ice cream, Kay’s cooking, a fast-paced walk, and a diet Pepsi at 3:00 p.m. When at home you would find him glued to CNN and ESPN. As he grew more forgetful, his attention focused on these messages to his family: he loved us all so much and he was so proud of his children.

Milo leaves many friends who will miss him, and the family is grateful for the friendship and companionship you shared with him. Thank you to all who have reached out to us this week and celebrate Milo’s life with your memories. We are especially grateful to the wonderful staff and residents of Pheasant Run at Prairie Ridge who became family to Milo and Kay.
