Mrs. Melanie Rodriguez, age 60, of Palm Desert, California, formerly of Orange City, passed away on, Thursday, August 20, in Palm Desert, California.

There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, October 3, from 4:30pm to 6:00pm, at the Immanuel Reformed Church in Orange City.

The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is assisting the family.

Melanie Mae was born on August 30, 1959, in Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of Christian Theodore and Ila Mae (Mulder) Schiebout. She was raised in Orange City, where she attended the Orange City Christian School and Unity Christian High School. She then graduated from Dordt College in Sioux Center, with a major in theater and history and a minor in English.

On August 11, 1990, she married Victor Rodriguez in Orange City. They made their home in Palm Desert, California, where they raised their son, Victor “Tory” Rodriguez.

Melanie was an elementary school teacher for many years before switching to the high school level. School and teaching were extremely important to her. Several years following her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, she started teaching at an alternative education high school, where students returned to receive their G.E.D. She felt her work there very rewarding. She then became a substitute teacher and continued to do what she loved until March.

She also enjoyed reading and attending her son’s activities. She had a strong faith that showed throughout her teaching career and left an impact on many.

Survivors include her husband of more than thirty years, Victor and her son, Victor “Tory” Rodriguez, both of Palm Desert; her mother, Ila Schiebout, of Orange City; two brothers, Courtney Schiebout, of Orange City; and Greg Schiebout, and his wife, Karen, of Moravia, Iowa; her sister, Virginia, and her husband, Alan Smith, of Van Alstyne, Texas; and several nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her father, Christian Schiebout, and her nephew, Joel Schiebout.
