Mrs. Lorraine Hoffman, age 93, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2020, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a private family graveside service on Thursday, August 13, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton. The Rev. Fr. Daniel Greving will officiate.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Helen Lorraine was born on June 10, 1927, in Le Mars, the daughter of Thurit Kelsey and Mayme (Grant) Chapman. She was raised in Le Mars and graduated from the St. Mary’s Catholic Academy in Alton. While in high school she met her future husband, Phillip John Hoffman.

Lorraine and Phil were united in marriage on June 12, 1947, in Struble, following his return from serving in the United States Army. They made their home on a farm east of Alton, where she was a homemaker, raising their eight children. In 1980, they retired and moved into Alton. Phillip passed away on April 2, 1997 in Sioux City, after more than 49 years of marriage.

She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Mayflower Society. She enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. She loved receiving handwritten letters from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her eight children, Barbara, and her husband, Curtis Brown, of Loudon, Tennessee; William C. Hoffman, and his wife, Margarita, of Lancaster California; Elaine, and her husband, Michael Klein, Sr., of Sioux City; Phillip Hoffman, Jr., of Jacksonville, Florida; Robert S. Hoffman, of Alton; Debra, and her husband, Cliff Morren, of Bennington, Nebraska; Janet Hoffman, of Omaha; and Susan Hoffman, and her wife, Marcia, of St. Petersburg, Florida; fourteen grandchildren, Mark Brown, and his wife, Jen; Michelle, and her husband, Bryant Nelson; Cynthia, and her husband, Tony Lamecker; Jason Hoffman, and his wife Shannon; Cindy, and her husband, Mark Gavin; Michael Klein, Jr., and his wife, Allison; Andrew Klein, and his wife, Hilary; Thomas Hoffman; Katie Hoffman; Megan Hoffman; Amanda, and her husband Rob Steenholdt; Sarah, and her husband Jason Tabor; Adrian, and her husband, Taylor Phillips; and Corey Young, and his wife, Jill; 29 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Vernell Chapman, of Le Mars.

In addition to her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Margret “Mitzi” Hoffman; and her four siblings, Robert Chapman, and his wife, Agnes; Kay, and her husband, Harry Mower; Roland Chapman, and his wife, Ann; and Gerald Chapman.
