De Volksvriend of 20 Dec 1923
After a short ill ness of only three days, very unexpectedly, an elderly fellow citizen of ours, the widow Van Der Laan, died on Thursday morning, 12 December She had reached the age of 72 years and almost 11 months. She was born in Dronrijp, Friesland, the Netherlands, on 18 January, 1851, and married Mr. T. Van der Laan, who was taken from her by death in 1890, leaving her with three children, two sons and a daughter. In the same year she left with her children for the Ver Staton, they settled in Orange City, and lived there. Her late daughter, Mrs. Cornelius Muilenburg, preceded her only a few months ago, and Mrs. Van der Laan is survived by the latter, Lou and John, the latter's wife, and her son Cornelius, are survived by her son. Her eldest son, Lou, has been at her home, and continues to live first in her house, and to the other children and family we also feel warmly, and wish them comfort from above. The funeral took place Saturday from the 1st Ref. church, where she was a member, led by Ds. J. Engelsman, who had chosen to text Filip, 1:21.
