Reverend J. B. Vanden Hoek of Hull, a retired minister and a resident here for many years, died Thursday morning, October 14th, from a heart attack. He had been ailing for several months, but for a time before his death seemed to be getting along fine.
He was well known throughout the northwest, having served numerous charges--at Salisburg, Iowa; Carnes, Iowa; Volga, South Dakota; and Hills, Minnesota--and was one of the founders of the Western Academy at this place.
Mr. Vanden Hoek was born October 23rd, 1868, at Roseland, Illinois, and was nearly sixty-nine years old at the time of his death. His first wife died in 1926 and in 1928 he was married to Elizabeth Grasman.
Besides his loving wife he is survived by three sons: T. B. Vanden Hoek of Lynnville, Iowa; Rev. John Vanden Hoek of Everett, Washington; and Samuel Vanden Hoek of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and two daughters: Mrs. (Rev.) S. G. Broudesma of Muskegon, Michigan and Miss Bertha Vanden Hoek of Farmington, New Mexico and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Monday, October 18th, and was largely attended. Services were held from the Christian Reformed Church, with Dr. R. L. Haan officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery at Hull. The Index joins the many friends of the family in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
