Mrs. Margene Van Zanten, age 84, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2020, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, July 21, at 2:00pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jordan Helming will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Margene Gertrude was born on December 20, 1935, in Orange City, the daughter of William John and Henrietta (Plender) Ter Horst. She was raised in Orange City, where she attended the Orange City Christian School, the Northwestern Academy, and Northwestern College.

On September 10, 1957, she married William Cornelius Van Zanten in Orange City. They made their home in Rock Valley for 57 years before moving to Orange City in 2014. She became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center in June of 2018.

Mrs. Van Zanten was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, and formerly of the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. She worked for the dean of Northwestern College and Farm Bureau, both in Orange City, before becoming a homemaker after her marriage to “Bill”. When her children were older, she started working part-time for Whispering Heights in Rock Valley, helping plan activities for the senior residents. She truly loved this job and worked there for almost thirty years.

She loved the Lord and showed this love by her care for her husband and children. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, listening to music, playing cards with friends, walking, weightlifting, traveling, and shopping. In the words of her husband, “She was a dandy.”

Survivors include her husband of more than 62 years; four children and their spouses, Carla and Brian Goslinga, of Orange City; Bob and Cathi Van Zanten, of Rock Valley; Denise and BJ Mulder, of Orange City; and Julie and Darin Van Oort, of Hull; nine grandchildren, Kim (Brent) Philipsen, of Orange City; Dan (Beth) Goslinga, of Hospers; Breanna (Cody) Nelson, of Sioux Falls; Marcus (Kayla De Jong) Barron, of Alton; Brady (Kim) Goslinga of Newkirk; Chelsea Walker, of Sioux Falls; Kyler (Kerigan) Mulder, of Johnston; Jordyn (Tim) Teunissen, of Hull; and Keegan Mulder, of Des Moines; a granddaughter-in-law, Rachel Van Zanten, of Rock Valley; seventeen great-grandchildren; three siblings, Art (Lorna) Ter Horst, of Orange City; Geri Kraai, of Rock Valley; and Stan (Dorothy) Ter Horst, of Sioux Falls; a sister-in-law, Jo Vander Schaaf, of Rock Valley; a brother-in-law, Gerald (Jan) Van Zanten, of California; numerous nephews and nieces; and special friends, Ken and Ladonna Huisman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Dalton Van Zanten; three brothers-in-law, Don Kraai, Duane Vander Schaaf, and Gilbert Roozeboom; and a sister-in-law, Bertha Roozeboom.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City and Rock Valley Christian Schools.
