Mrs. Freeda Lefever, age 96, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, July 2, at 10:00am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Freeda Ardean was born on August 7, 1923, in Moody County, South Dakota, the daughter of Charles R. and Elsie (Winklepleck) Sapp. She grew up on farms in Moody and Lake County where she graduated from the Rutland, South Dakota High School. She then attended Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota, earning her teaching certificate before working in rural schools in Moody County.

On July 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Phares Ziegler “Bud” Lefever, in Volga, South Dakota. The couple first lived in Los Angeles, California, before returning to South Dakota where they made their home on her parents’ farm near Brookings. They later moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Bud started his teaching career. During their married life they also lived in Oostburg, Wisconsin, and Haddon Heights, New Jersey, before settling in Orange City in 1965, where Freeda worked as a cook at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Mrs. Lefever was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she participated in the Harmony Circle for a number of years. She also went on several mission projects, including trips to Marysville, California; Cary, Mississippi; and the Dominican Republic. She enjoyed traveling, quilting, doing crafts, gardening, and reading.

In addition to her husband of 73 years, she is survived by her six children: Beth and her husband, Bob Schoone-Jongen, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Bruce Lefever and his wife, Connie, of Orange City; Tom Lefever, and his wife, Luann, of Denver, Colorado; Barry Lefever and his wife, Karen, of Svea, Minnesota; Margaret and her husband, Michael De Jager, of Doon; and Jeanne Lefever, of Sioux City; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lennice Pakala, of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Charles William Sapp, and his wife, Lorraine, of San Antonio, Texas.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, one in infancy, and Betty Jo Fish; a brother, Oscar Earl Sapp; two brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Luke Society or the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
