From the Sioux County Capital, December 2, 1937:

Simon Jacob Mak, 67, died at his home in Cedar Rapids, Nov. 25. He was born at Pella, Iowa, but spent his childhood in Orange City. He was a printer, publishing the Inwood Herald for many years. He was also postmaster at Inwood at one time. In Cedar Rapids he was claim adjuster for the Farmers Insurance Co. of that place.

Surviving are his wife, son Leo Mak of Waterloo, two daughters, 3 sisters and 1 brother. Mrs. Elizabeth Newberg of Orange City is a sister. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Perrott and Mrs. Mary Zwang of Sheldon another sister attended the funeral.

Death of Former Sioux County Man

Simon J. Mak, 67, of Cedar Rapids, a former resident of Orange City, passed away at his home Thanksgiving Day following an illness of several months from heart trouble. Funeral services were held the following Saturday and burial was made at Marengo.

Mr. Mak was the founder of the Inwood Herald, publishing the first issue 47 years ago. He learned the printer’s trade in the Alton Democrat office, working on the Alton Democrat for $1 per week, walking back and forth from his home in Orange City every day. For many years Mr. Mak in partnership with his father, owned the Doon Press. While at Inwood he also served as postmaster and is given credit with having run the first silent movie there. Mr. Mak was a staunch republican and took an active part in politics throughout his life.

His death certificate shows him living at 1600 3rd Ave. S.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a resident of Cedar Rapids for 1 year 6 months; wife Katherine Hogan Mak; born Jan. 10, 1870 in Pella; parents Francisces Mak and Cornelia Dingman, both born in the Netherlands; occupation, insurance agent, fire and auto insurance, for 40 years, last worked at this occupation Jan. 5, 1936; died at 1:50 a.m. November 25, 1937; causes, acute heart block, onset 11/23/37, auricular fibrilation, onset 1936?, cardiac hypertrophy, onset 1930?; buried in the Marengo Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.

Mak (1878-1962); one child listed, Verda Vivian Mak Crane (1901-1991).

The Johnson County, Iowa marriage register for 1923/1924 has groom Simon J. Mak, age 54, resident of Des Moines, occupation insurance, born in Pella, parents Frank Mak and Katherine Dinger, second marriage; bride Katharine A. Hogan, age 44, resident of Marengo, Iowa, born in Marengo, parents Edward Hogan and Margaret Burns, first marriage; married in Iowa City Feb. 21, 1924.

Appointments of U.S. Postmasters on Ancestry.com shows him appointed postmaster at Inwood 14 June 1897, 9 Jan 1907, and 1 Feb 1911.
