LEWIS CONWAY DIED MONDAY--DEATH FOLLOWED OF MANY MONTHS DURATION --WAS 65 YEARS OF AGE--AND LIVED IN SIOUX AND UNION COUNTIES ALL HIS LIFE

Lewis Conway passed away at 5 o’clock Monday morning at the home of his brother-in-law, J.G. Dalton, following a lingering illness of several months. He was taken ill last August with the flu and later complications set in which was followed by dropsy. He had been bedfast since last September and the end was not unexpected.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in this city with Reverend Father C.P. Conway in charge. The funeral was largely attended. Andrew McBride, John McCarthy, William P. Henkels, Claus Peters, John Keehn, and M.C. Callan acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery.

Lewis Conway, son of Michael and Anna (Quinn) Conway, was born in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, March 22, 1862, and so he was almost 65 years of age at the time of his death. In 1867 he came west with his people and settled east of Elk Point and later he moved to Burbank, South Dakota. In 1881 he returned to the vicinity of Elk Point, settling on what is known as the Lone Tree Farm. In 1890 he moved onto a farm northeast of Hawarden and made a home for his mother and other members of the family. He continued to live on this farm until 1910 when he was seriously injured in a runaway accident while he was driving a team hitched to a disc harrow. His left leg was so severely cut and crushed in the accident that it was necessary to amputate the limb. He never really recovered his usual good health after this injury. He then moved to Hawarden and made his home with his sister, the late J.C. Dalton. In 1912 he went to Winner, South Dakota, near which place he filed on a homestead and he lived there for three or four years. He then returned to Hawarden and again made his home with the Dalton family. After his return to Hawarden from Winner he followed the trade of a shoemaker. He never married.

He is survived by two brothers, Michael Conway of Hawarden and James Conway of Columbia, California , and one sister, Mrs. Bridget Clifford of Hawarden, but who at the present time is in California.

Mr. Conway was a man of quiet and unassuming nature but made lasting friendships with people with whom he came in contact. He lived an honest and upright life and will be greatly missed by numerous relatives and friends.
