From the Sioux County Capital, November 11, 1937:

Edward Carl Raak died Thursday, November 4 at. 10:30 a. m. at the age of 44 years and 7 months. He was born at Orange City, March 30, 1893. He was a son of Mrs. Ellen Raak. He attended the local public school and lived in this community all his life. At the time of his death he was employed in the Van Eizenga Lumber firm a position he held for the past 11 years.

In 1921 he was married to Miss Cornelia Hubers, who with two daughters, Eleanor and Ellen survive him. Other survivors are his mother, two sisters, Minnie. Mrs. John De Raad of Kingsley; Rena, Mrs. Ring De Jager of Orange City; six brothers, Gerrit and Ray of Orange City; Jerry Raak of Hospers; Elmer and Carl Raak of Chicago and Paul Raak of Ocheyedan.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home and 1:30 at the American Reformed church with Reverend Mr. L. Nattress officiating assisted by Reverend Mr. R. Bronkema. Interment was made in the Orange City cemetery with military rites in charge of the American Legion. Peter Mikkelson of Irene, S.D., an overseas buddy of Mr. Ed Raak, was here for the funeral services.

Edward Carl Raak, 44 years old, took his own life Thursday at about 10 a.m. at his home. He had been in low spirits for some time and his health had been bad since his return from the World War.

Funeral services were held Saturday and interment made in the Orange City cemetery with the John C. Pressman Post of the American Legion in attendance.

Edward Raak, 42, son of Mrs. Jerry Raak of Orange City, committed suicide last Thursday, Nov. 4th, by hanging himself in the attic at his home. When his wife missed him she called his employer, Hessel Vaneihenga, and a neighbor, Chris Aue, and they found his body hanging in the attic room. He had been in poor health for some time. He is survived by his widow and two children.

Overleden te Orange City, op Donderdag, 4 Nov te ongeveer 10:30 des morgens, Mr. Edward Carl Raak, in den leeftijd van 44 jaren en 7 maanden. Hij was een zoon van Mr en Mrs, Jerry Raak, en werd den 30n Maart, 1893 te Orange City geboren. In het jaar 1921 trad hij alhier in het huweiljk met Miss Cornelia Hubers, dochter van Mr. en Mrs. Albert Hubers, Sr. Uit dit huwelijk werden twee kinderen geboren, Eleanor en Ellen. De laatste 11 jaren was hij werkzaam voor de Van Eizenga Lumber Co. hier ter plaatse, en hij heeft deze firma gedurende deze reeks van jaren zeer getrouw gediend. Tijdens de wereldoorlog diende hij gedurende een jaar als soldaat in het Amerikaansche le¬ger aan de overzijde van den oceaan, en hij was derhalve een lid der Ameri¬can Legion.

Hij wordt overleefd door zijne echtgenoote, zijne twee dochters bovengenoemd, zijne moeder, Mrs. Jerry Raak, twee zusters, Minnie (Mrs. Jorn De Raad), Kingsley, Ia., Rena (Mrs. Ring De Jager), Orange City, en zes broers, Gerrit, te Orange City, Jerry te Hospers, Elmer en Carl te Chicago, Paul te Ocheyedan en Ray te Orange City. De begrafenisdiensten werden Zaterdag gehouden te 1 uur aan huis en te 1:30 in de Am. Geref. kerk (van welke gemeente hij lid was) onder leidlng van Ds. LeRoy Nattress, bijgestaan door Ds. Bronkema der le Chr. Geref. kerk. De militaire begrafenis , had plaats op de Orange City begraafplaats, onder leiding der American Legion.

TRANSLATION

Edward Carl Raak died in Orange City on Thursday, Nov. 4 at approximately 10:30 a.m., aged 44 years and 7 months. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Raak, and was born in Orange City on March 30, 1893. In the year 1921 he was married here to Miss Cornelia Hubers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hubers, Sr. Two children were born to this union, Eleanor and Ellen. The last 11 years he worked for the Van Eizenga Lumber Co. here, and has served this firm very faithfully during these years. During the World War, he served as a soldier in the American army overseas for a year, and was therefore a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, his two daughters mentioned above, his mother, Mrs. Jerry Raak, two sisters, Minnie (Mrs. Jorn De Raad), Kingslay, Ia., Rena (Mrs. Ring De Jager), Orange City, and six brothers, Gerrit at Orange City, Jerry at Hospers, Elmer and Carl at Chicago, Paul at Ocheyedan and Ray at Orange City.

The funeral services were held on Saturday at 1 o’clock at the house and at 1:30 in the American Reformed church (of which congregation he was a member) under the direction of Rev. LeRoy Nattress, assisted by Rev. Bronkema of the Christian Reformed church. The military funeral took place at the Orange City cemetery under direction of the American Legion.

FindaGrave has a photo of his headstone, containing this information. FindaGrave gives his parents as Jurrien Raak (1864-1935) and Aaltje Van Olst Raak (1867-1945); six siblings listed; wife Cornelia Hubers Raak (1895-1953); one child listed, Eleanor H. Raak Faurot (1921-2003).

U.S. Headstone Applications for Military Veterans on Ancestry.com gives his enlistment date as June 27, 1918, discharge date February 10, 1919; served as a Private First Class in Company C, 311th Field Signal Battlion, 86th Division, South Dakota.
