ALBERT E. HUGHES OF IRETON KILLED IN CAR-TRUCK CRASH

Albert Hughes, 59, of Ireton was killed instantly and two other men were severely injured at 7:30 Friday morning in a car-truck collision at an intersection a mile west and three north of the Ireton corner on Highway 10.

Mr. Hughes, driver of the truck and his companion, William Polous, of Ireton, both of whom employed by Schmitz Implement Company, Ireton, were enroute to a farm for repair work. Gilbert De Weerd farmer living three miles north of Ireton, driver of the car, was on his way to the Willis Wells farm to assist with the harvest. Both Mr. Polous and Mr. DeWeerd were taken to the Sioux Center Hospital where their condition was termed “good.”

Albert E. Hughes, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Hughes, was born September 5, 1898, at Ireton where he resided his entire life.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in which he served at one time as trustee and was at the time of his death, serving as elder. He belonged to the I.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges.

On August 5, 1936, he married Miss Viola Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Miller who resides In Ireton. For the past 35 years Mr. Hughes was employed by the implement company in Ireton, although it changd hands five timea while he remained an employee.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Monday at the home and at 2 o’clock at the Presbyterian Church, Reverend Ray M. Smith of Hinton officiating. A Quartette, Mrs. Russell Wade, Mrs. Gene Toben, Marlin Elits and Lloyd Simons, was accompanied by Mrs. A.W. Bartlett as pianist.

Pallbearers include Fred Schuette, Jack Schmitz, Neil Ekdom, Pete Eisma, Richard Herwynen and Jake Sinkey. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Satterlee Funeral Home.

Survivors include the widow, seven daughters - Mrs. R. Schneider of Roland, Mrs. Raymond Wierda of Sioux Center, Mrs. Abe Brinkhouse of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Nancy Jordan of Omaha, Mrs. Marlin Westra of Ireton and Sally and Mickey at home; two sons - John of Sioux Falls, and Donald of Sioux Center; sister Mrs. Anna Hughes of Seattle, Washington, a half sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Kellems of Turner, Oregon; two half brothers - George Sturgis of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Harry Sturgis of Montana, 11 grandchildren.
