John Oscar Lind, pioneer Hawarden merchant and extensive property owner, died suddenly at his home in this city at 9:50 Wednesday night following a heart attack. He suffered an attack while at work in his store about 9 o'clock Wednesday morning. A physician was summoned and he was removed at once to his home and put to bed. He dozed and was restless during a greater part of the day, but sometime after 9 o'clock last night he requested Mrs. Lind to brew him a cup of tea. She went to prepare it and when she returned she found him dying.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church and interment will be made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

John Oscar Lind, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Lind, was born in Narka, Sweden, February 27, 1867, so would have been 70 years old next month. He came to America with his parents when he was two years old and the family located at Dixon, Illinois, where his early boyhood was spent. His father established a general store in Calliope in the early 80's and the family moved here shortly afterwards. A few years later the business was moved to Hawarden and the Lind Store has been a Hawarden business institution for 52 years. Mr. Lind attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion from which he was graduated and immediately joined his father in the mercantile business and soon succeeded to the management of the business which he has ever since continued to operate, adding a ready-to-wear store a number of years ago. His business ventures were successful and ten or twelve years ago he erected a number of modern bungalows for rental purposes.

Mr. Lind was united in marriage with Miss Kate Ericson, a few miles west of Hawarden, on August 29, 1894. Two children were born to them, a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Dealy, who passed away March 11, 1934, and a son, Lawrence, who died July 19, 1934, only four months after the death of his sister.

Mrs. Lind survives him and he also leaves one sister, Mrs. David Woodworth of Brooklyn, New York. His only grandchild, Miss Mildred Dealy, has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Lind since the death of her mother three years ago, but she went to Los Angeles, California, a month ago to spend the winter with relatives there.

Mr. Lind was a man of sound business judgement and of the highest personal integrity. He always had faith in Hawarden and its institutions. He was a lifelong affiliate of the Methodist Church and a dependable supporter of all church activities. He served as a member of the Hawarden school board for a number of years and had been a director of the Farmers State Bank ever since its organization twenty years ago.

Last year Mr. and Mrs. Lind presented to the city of Hawarden the half block of land on which the new Community Hospital was erected. He had many friends who admired him for his sterling character and unswerving integrity. His loss will be keenly felt in the community and sincere sympathy goes out to his devoted wife and other relatives in their sorrow.
