Mr. Joe Jr. Bomgaars, age 87, of Sioux Center, formerly of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, May 4, at 2:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Van Rathbun will officiate. A private family interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation without the family, will be on Sunday, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Joe Jr. was born on October 1, 1932, on the family farm south of Hull, the son of Joe N. and Nellie (Schalekamp) Bomgaars. He was raised in northwest Iowa and attended country school.

He was united in marriage to Nelvina De Vos, on October 1, 1953, in Hull. They farmed in the Hull area until moving into town in the late nineteen eighties. He also worked in the sale barn at Tri-State Livestock in Sioux Center and at the Cenex gas station in Hull. Together they enjoyed playing cards and square skipping. Nelvina passed away on August 15, 2007, in Hull, after more than 53 years of marriage.

Mr. Bomgaars was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hull, where he had served as a deacon and an elder. He was also a member of the Hull Saddle Club and was a 4-H leader. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include his three children and their spouses, Joel and Lori Bomgaars, of Maricopa, Arizona; Wanda and Mike Harmsen, of Rock Valley; and Calvin and Connie Bomgaars, of Hull; nine grandchildren, J.D. Bomgaars, and his wife, Alana; Nicole Bomgaars; Micah Harmsen and Heather Humble; Nathan Harmsen, and his wife, Erica; Daniel Harmsen, and his wife, Kristine; Jonathan Harmsen, and his wife, Gracia; Jared Bomgaars, and his wife, Brittany; Molly Bomgaars, and her fiancé, Dave Cleveringa; and Ashley Ogle; thirteen great-grandchildren, Hanna, Madison, Michaela, Rope, Colby, Caydence, Kya, Laramie, Dakota, Ezra, Ruby, Rylee, and Jacob; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bomgaars, of Sioux Center.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Nick Bomgaars; Jake Bomgaars, and his wife, Angeline; Geneva, and her husband, Bill Van Sloten; and Muriel Bomgaars.
