Walter Vugteveen, age 82, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Friday, December 13, 2002 at the Orange City Hospital. The funeral service was held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Pioneer United Methodist Church. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery, Reverend Jerry Robertson was the officiant.

Walter was born August 2, 1920 at Rock Valley, son of William and Susan (Post) Vugteveen. He was in the United States Army during World War II including serving in the European Theater until his brother Gerrit was killed in combat. He was honorably discharged from the service January 16, 1946.

Walter married Mavis Moore on September 18, 1946 at Rock Valley. He first worked at Thornburg Company before working for IPS (now MidAmerican Energy Company) for 32 years, retiring in 1983. Walter was a 50 year member of the Pioneer United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and serving in many positions. He was also a lifetime member of Rock Valley’s VFW.

Survivors include his wife Mavis; daughter Linda Mulder of Sioux City, Iowa; son Larry Vugteveen of Houston, Texas; daughter Beverly Boon of Rock Valley; brother Harold of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren, Melissa Nutt, Kelina and Lance Vugteveen, Brad and Jim Boon; great-grandchildren including Joshua and Kaleb Nutt.

Memorials mat be directed to the Pioneer United Methodist Church.
