FUNERAL OF MRS. BERNARD J. VELDHUIS AT ALTON THIS THURSDAY

Mrs. B.J. Veldhuis, 67, an Alton resident since 1953, died Sunday, February 24th at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, where she was a patient with a heart condition for several weeks.

Mrs. Veldhuis, nee Siepkje Veenstra, was born at Urterp, Netherlands October 16, 1895 and was married to Bernard J. Veldhuis February 21, 1924. The couple and their three children came to Alton in October 1953 direct from the Netherlands and Mr. Veldhuis, a skilled baker, opened a bakery in Alton.

Surviving are her husband: one daughter, Minnie (Mrs. Simon Scholten) of Alton; two sons, Sipko of Holland, Michigan and Henry (Hank) of Sheldon; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 P.M. in the Reformed Church at Alton, Reverend Ralph Meyer officiating, with burial in Nassau Township Cemetery.

A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Veldhuis suffered from ill health for some years after arriving here and was ever patient in her affliction. She took great pride in her children, who have done so well in their careers and received much of their education since coming to the United States.

Sip, the oldest son graduates this year from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. He and his wife and daughter arrived by car from Holland early Monday morning.

Hank is a high school teacher at Sheldon and Minnie is married to County Supervisor Scholten..

Mrs. Veldhuis’s great desire was to see her son received into the ministry, an event soon to transpire.
