From the Alton Democrat, February 26, 1937:

MRS. M. LEWIS LAID TO REST ORANGE CITY
Pioneer Sioux Co. Mother Died Feb. 17

Mrs. M. E. Lewis died Wednesday, February 17, at Ajo, Arizona, at the home of her son, Evan Lewis. Word was received here last week Tuesday that Mrs. Lewis was critically ill with pneumonia and that there was little hope for her recovery.

Mrs. Lewis was the daughter of Gerrit Vande Steeg, Sr. Mrs. Lewis was 74 years of age and was married to Maris E. Lewis in 1885. She is survived by her husband, Maris E. Lewis, three sons, Commander Howard Lewis of New York, F. G. Lewis of Ajo, Arizona, and M. V. Lewis of Chicago, Illinois, and one daughter, Mrs. Leland Case of Raleigh, North Carolina. A son, Carl, died a few years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis resided here for many years and left here for Moscow, Idaho in 1903 and have made their home in Spokane, Washington, for several years. M. V. Lewis and Mrs. Case accompanied the body from Arizona to Orange City. Commander Howard Lewis was here for the funeral also.

Funeral services were held at Van Etten Funeral Parlors Monday afternoon with Rev. Nattress officiating. Mr. G. T. Vande Steeg, Sioux City, Mrs. Guy Vanden Burg, Sioux City, Mrs. Nora Van Benthem, St. Paul, and Mrs. Harriet Van Benthem, St. Paul, attended the funeral services. The following served as pall bearers: W. W.Schultz, J. E. Oggel, G. Klay, H. Te Paske, H. Lubbers and C. G. Hospers.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the American Reformed Church, Orange City, and took an active and prominent part in church and social life of the community.

RESEARCH NOTES

A similar obituary was published in the Sioux County Capital (Feb.25). An obituary (in Dutch) in De Volksvriend, February 25, adds that she was born in Pella, Iowa, on 24 November 1862, and came to Orange City in 1870 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Van de Steeg Sr.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Lewis, Henrietta, b. 1862, d. 1937 (Vande Steeg), ss Maris, West Lawn Cem, Orange City IA.

The Arizona Death Records index on Ancestry.com has Henrietta Lewis, age 74, born 24 Nov. 1862 in Pella, Iowa, died 17 Feb. 1937 in Pima County, Arizona, father Garret Van Der Sterg[sic] and Jacoba Van Der Sterg[sic].

The 1900 U.S. census for Orange City shows Maris E. Lewis (38), occupation real estate, married 15 years; wife Henrietta (37); children Howard K. (12), Evan G. (10), Carl P. (8), Charlotte (4), and Maris V. (1); and a lodger/servant, Annie Van Gelderen (16), born in the Netherlands.

In 1930 Maris E. (68) and Henrietta (67) were living in Spokane, Washington, where he worked in an insurance office.
