Ed Van Surksum, 92, of Hospers, died Sunday, May 15, 1994, at the Heritage House in Orange City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hospers with the Reverend Brian Janssen officiating. Burial will be in the Hospers Cemetery prior to the service. Visitation with the family present will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fellowship Hall of the Church. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Hospers is in charge of arrangements.

Ed Van Surksum was born December 29, 1901 in Orange City, the son of Gerrit and Johanna (Mouw) Van Surksum. The family moved to Minnesota where Ed grew up. As a young man he moved to the Hospers area.

On November 22, 1928, he married Lola Hofmeyer at Granville. The couple lived in Alton for seven years where he operated a barber shop. They then moved to Hospers where he was a barber until 1990.

Besides barbering he did saw sharpening and furniture repair, refinishing and caning.

Mr. Van Surksum was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hospers where he served as an elder, deacon and taught Sunday school. He also served as custodian at the church for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife and two children; a son Garrett and his wife Nancy of Sioux City; a daughter, LaRena and her husband, Terry Harvat of Omaha; four grandchildren, Dr. Roderick Van Surksum and his wife, Amy of Misawa, Japan, Taunya and her husband, Randy Westhoff of Ankeny, and Michael and Andrew Harvat, both of Omaha; and one great-granddaughter, Grace Marie Van Surksum of Misawa, Japan.

He was preceded in death by three brothers; five sisters; two half-brothers; and two half-sisters. Ed was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather and was loved dearly by his family.
