Death of Mrs. D. Moorlag

Mrs. D. Moorlag, a resident of Rock Valley and vicinity for many years, passed away at her home here Monday, August 10, following a lingering illness.

Mrs. Moorlag was born in Gronigen, Netherlands, January 26, 1864, and had attained the age of 72 years 6 months and 14 days. Her early life was spent in her native land, where she grew to womanhood. In 1886, she came to this country, and lived in Rock Valley and vicinity until death claimed her.

Mrs. Moorlag, whose maiden name was Jurena Nymeyer, was united in marriage with D. Moorlag April 3, 1891, who survives her. To this union nine children were born, five of whom are living. They are, Mrs. John Boer, Hans Moorlag, Albert Moorlag, Mrs. B. Veltkamp, and Mrs. M. Van Duyn, all of whom live in Rock Valley and vicinity.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon, at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 in the Christian Reformed church. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of many friends.

A similar obituary was published in the Alton Democrat (August 28), and her death was briefly noted in other area newspapers.

The obituary of her husband, Dirk Moorlag (posted separately) adds that one daughter, Mrs. John Hendriks, died 17 years ago [he died in 1938, so she would have died about 15 years before Mrs. Moorlag’s death].

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Moorlag, Jurriena, born 26 Jan 1864, died 10 Aug 1946/36, Mother, Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley IA.

Her FindaGrave.com page has her as Jurriena Nymeyer Moorlag, with the above birth and death dates and a photo of her headstone. It gives her parents as Berend Nymeyer (1827-1909) and Anna Maria Heidelberg NyMeyer (1834-1892), and her spouse as Dedde Moorlag (1868-1938). (Dedde appears in the Sioux County Cemetery Index under this name, as well.) It lists six children: Anna M. Moorlag Hendriks (1892-1921), Minnie Moorlag Boer (1894-1982), Hans Moorlag (1898-1964), Albert Moorlag (1903-1953), Rolena Moorlag Veltkamp (1905-1984), and Berdena Moorlag Van Duyn (1908-1961).
