FORMER RESIDENT HERE PASSES
Relatives here received word of the death of Fred Van Zuiden, 82, at Sioux City on Monday. He was a former Orange City resident. Mr. Van Zuiden was born in the Netherlands on September 21, 1854. He had been a salesman and retired a few years ago. A son, Herman P., of Omaha, and four daughters, Mrs. Anna Nelson, Mrs. K. K. Fobes, Mrs. Lloyd Soderstrom, all of Sioux City, and Mrs. Clara Kent of Roseburg, Oregon, survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Knox Presbyterian church, Sioux City.

No obituary was readily found in the Sioux County Capital of October 15 or 22.
His death certificate gives his parents as Fred VanZuiden and Anna [no surname]; occupation, salesman, Rawleigh Goods, for 12 years; widowed; informant H. P. Van Zuiden; died at home (811 West 3rd Street, Sioux City, where he had lived for 40 years) at 2:30 a.m. October 12, 1936; causes, chronic nephritis, heart failure, miocarditis; contributory cause, arteriosclerosis; buried in Graceland Cemetery, Sioux City.
His FindaGrave.com page has him as Fred “Freerk” Van Zuiden; adds his birthplace, Den Andel, Winsum Municipality, Groningen, Netherlands; gives his death day as 14 October; wife Teuntje Muilenburg Van Zuiden (1857-193, married 1877).
The 1900 U.S. Census shows him and his family in Sioux City: Fred (whose first name is not actually given), age 46, born Sept. 1854 in Holland, immigrated 1855, married 23 years, a dry goods clerk; wife Teuntke, age 42, born Oct. 1857 in Iowa, mother of 6 children, 6 living; children Anna (Dec. 1878), Clara (Oct. 1881), Minnie (Aug. 1885), Herman (Sept. 1888), Gertrude (Feb 1893), and Esther (May 1896), all born in Iowa.
A register of appointments of U.S. postmasters on Ancestry.com shows Frederick Van Zuiden appointed at Sioux Center 8 Nov 1878.
