JAKE VER MEER
1874—1936

Mr. Jake Ver Meer was born in Alto, Wis., Feb. 8, 1874. He was united in marriage to Miss Gezeina Te Slaa at Sioux Center on March 21, 1901. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and eight children, Louise, Mrs. M. Intveld; Gertrude, Mrs J. Van Ommeren of Hull; Effie Mrs. H. Stientjes of Sheldon; Johanna, Mrs. J. W. Kooiker of Boyden; Pricilla, Mrs. P. Van Ommeren of Perkins; Hattie, Gerrit and Edward of Hull, also 16 grandchildren, one brother, Evert of Middleburg, 3 sisters Mrs Vander Keift of Rock Valley; Mrs. Jennie Jolling of Vesper, Wis.; and Rena Ver Meer of Wapon, Wis.; two half-sisters Mrs. Gerritsen of Wisconsin and Mrs. H. Prins of Sioux Center.

Mr. Ver Meer passed away May 19, at 3 o'clock at the age of 62 years 3 months and 11 days at the Hull hospital. Funeral services were held on Friday, 12:30 o'clock at the home and 1:30 at the First Reformed Church, Hull, where he had been an elder for several years. Rev. Douwstra conducted the services. A male quartet sang two numbers, “Jesus Savior Pilot Me” and “Have Thine Own Way Lord.” The following elders were pallbearers: Mr. Wesselink, Mr. Gunnink, Mr. Wissiink, Mr. L. R. Kooiker, Mr. J. Zoet and Mr. Prins. Mr. Ver Meer was laid to rest in the Hope cemetery, Hull.

Obituary of J. W. VerMeer; Buried Here Last Friday

J. W. Ver Meer of Hull died in the local hospital Tuesday, following an illness of two months. The funeral was held last Friday at the home and from the First Reformed Church of Hull, Rev. G. H. Douwstra officiating. Interment was at Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Ver Meer was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and friend of all mankind. His memory will linger long in the minds of all who knew him.

J. W. Ver Meer was born February 8, 1874 at Alto, Wisconsin, and was from a family of two brothers and six sisters. He settled in Iowa in 1899, and was married to Gezina Te Slaa, March 21, 1901. The first fourteen years they lived on a farm southwest of Hull. In the year 1915 they moved to a farm north of Hull, where they have lived since.

To this union were born eight children, six girls and two boys. The children are: Louise, Mrs. Marinus Intveld; Gertrude, Mrs. Joe Van Ommeren; Effie, Mrs. Harry Stientjes; Johanna, Mrs. John Kooiker; Priscilla, Mrs. Peter Van Ommeren; and Hattie, Gerrit and Edward, at home. There are also seventeen grandchildren surviving.

Mr, Ver Meer was a member of the First Reformed Church and served the church as a deacon and elder for many years. He was also teacher for Bible and Sunday School classes. His trade was that of a farmer and he followed this trade for over thirty-five years. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Township Schools and as a director of the local creamery.

Besides his wife and children he is survived by one brother and five sisters.

His death certificate has Jacob W. Ver Meer, resident of Hull for 21 years, a farmer; wife Cynthia Ver Meer; born February 8, 1874 in Wisconsin; parents Everet Ver Meer and Jeutjes Lockhorst, both born in Holland; died in the Hull Hospital at 3:20 a.m. May 19, 1936; cause, acute dilatation of the heart, onset May 15, 1936; contributory cause, coronary sclerosis, onset April 1, 1936.

He registered for the World War I draft on September 12, 1918, at age 44. His physical description at that time was medium height and build, blue eyes, light brown hair.
