From the Alton Democrat, June 5, 1936, Rock Valley news:

Mrs. Richard Holmes passed away at her home west of Rock Valley at 5 o’clock Friday morning, May 29.

Bertha Wilson was born on a farm at the Ernisse Lake just west of Rock Valley on June 1, 1871, where she grew up in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Wilson. The family moved to Sioux City for a short time but later returned to this vicinity where she reached womanhood. She was married to George Osborne and four children were born to them, two of whom survive. Mr. Osborne died in 1920. Several years later she was united in marriage to Richard Osborne [actually, Holmes] and they made their home in Sioux City for a short time.

Three sisters and one brother survive, namely: Mrs. Len McDonald of Washington state, Mrs. John Rowe of Minneapolis, Mrs. Sarah Kewley of Kadoka, S. D., and Leon Wilson of Rock Valley. The two children surviving are Frank Osborne of Rock Valley and Viola Mae (Mrs. Olin Henderson) and eight grandchildren, besides nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Henderson on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Reverend L. A. Hunsley, pastor of the Methodist church. The vocal numbers, "Abide With Me," and "Rock of Ages" were sung by Helen and Sue Vander Laan, accompanied by Miss Zoe Smith. Interment was at Valley View Cemetery.

Mrs. Holmes was the first white child to be born in this vicinity and was well known and highly regarded by all the early settlers of this territory.
