ANDREW VAN NIMWEGEN RITES HELD AT ALTON SATURDAY

Impressive services were held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church for Andrew Van Nimwegen, who died January 17, at Phoenix, Arizona in the home of his son, Robert.

Reverend John Maze officiated and appropriate music was furnished by Eulyn Riemersma, organist and a vocal quartet of ladies, Mesdames Sylva Kiernan, Karen Boeyink, Greta Eason and Glen De Vries.

Pallbearers were Gerald Keizer, John W. Smith, Chas. B. Hoeven, Bob Zevenbergen, Don Lammers and Virgil Albers.

The American Flag covering the World War I veteran’s casket was presented to his daughter, Mrs. Bruce Cunningham by the Honorable Charles B. Hoeven, who noted that his comrade, the late Mr. Van Nimwegen was a charter member of the Floyd Post No. 200. American Legion was the second Commander of the Post and in subsequent years served in other offices. He was the tenth charter member to go to his reward.

Andrew married Dorothy Nettie Hyink on October 21, 1919 in Alton, Iowa. Dorothy passed away in 1962.

Mr. Van Nimwegen’s three surviving children, Bob of Phoenix, Phil of Tucson, Arizona and Sally, Mrs. Bruce Cunningham of Palos Verdes, California arrived in Sioux Falls by plane Friday evening. They were met by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hentages and by Mr. Amos Van Etten, who was in charge of funeral arrangements.

A Nassau Township Cemetery military honors were accorded by the firing squad and color guard of Floyd Post.

Following the services a group of ladies of the church served coffee and refreshments in the church basement, a courtesy greatly appreciated by the family.

Present from away besides the children were Mr. Van Nimwegen’s brother, Harry of Minneapolis, his sister, Mrs. Kate Gasink of St. James and her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Kramer; and Mrs. E.H. Carey of Le Mars; also a number of friends from Orange City.

Alton business places were closed during the services in tribute to their former associate and friend.
