DEATH STRIKES QUICK BLOW--VERNE BALL DIED WHILE HERE TO ATTEND MOTHER’S RITES--WAS 49 YEARS OLD AND SPENT A LARGE PART OF HIS LIFE HERE--LEAVES A WIFE AND BROTHER

Here to attend the funeral of his mother, Jennie (Ross) Ball, whose death occurred Sunday night, Verne E. Ball was stricken with a heart attack Tuesday night which resulted fatally. He had partaken of a hearty supper at the mother’s home with other relatives and later in the evening complained of a pain in his back below the left shoulder. He attributed it to an attack of indigestion and later decided to retire. His brother, Lloyd Ball, assisted him upstairs when the pain quickly became more pronounced. He requested his brother to slap him on the back in an effort to relieve the gas pressure and this action served to relieve him to some extent. He then asked his brother to get him a cup of tea. This required some few minutes but when he returned upstairs with the tea he found him lying across the bed with life apparently extinct. A physician was hurriedly called but life was gone. Prior to Tuesday night he had not complained of feeling ill since his arrival here Monday afternoon.

He had left his home at Johnston, Iowa, so hurriedly Sunday night after being apprised of his mother’s death, that his wife did not accompany him to Hawarden, but made plans to leave home Tuesday night to be here for his mother’s funeral on Wednesday morning and did not learn of her husband’s death until after she reached Hawarden.

Verne Emmett Ball was born in Hawarden November 14, 1889, so was just past 49 years of age. He grew to young manhood here, attending the Hawarden Public Schools. After completing his high school work he went west and was united in marriage with Lulu Stockton, who also was born and spent her girlhood in Hawarden. They were married at Greenacres, Washington, February 14, 1911. They lived in Spokane for a few years and then returned to Iowa, locating at Eldora where he was employed for several years as agent for the American Express Company. Later he was transferred to Vermillion by the company and then resigned to become cashier of the Chatsworth Savings Bank, which position he held for a few years, when he again entered the employ of the Express Company at Canton, South Dakota. Subsequently they moved back to Hawarden and spent a few years here until the fall of 1938 when he was appointed old age assistance investigator for Hardin County and they again made their home in Eldora. They went from here to Des Moines and for the past year have been making their home at Johnston, a small place a few miles from Des Moines. There are no children and he leaves only his wife and brother, Lloyd R. Ball of Hawarden. Mrs. Ball’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank R. Stockton, still reside at Greenacres, Washington.

Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Friday afternoon at the home of the deceased mother. Interment will be made in Grace Hill Cemetery.
