LLOYD R. BALL, HAWARDEN MAYOR THREE TIMES , DIES

Lloyd Richard Ball Sr., 59, mayor of Hawarden three times, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following an illness of four years.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Friday afternoon at the Associated Church with Reverend John C. Thorns officiating. The early afternoon hour was chosen because of a World Day of Prayer observance to be at 2:30. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home.

Hawarden business places will be closed during the funeral.

Mr. Ball, who spent practically all his life in Hawarden, practiced law here 31 years. He served as mayor of Hawarden six years and for a number of years was city attorney. For a number of years he served on the county draft board and was still a member at the time of his death. While in college he enlisted in the army December 19, 1917, and served two years at Camp Hancock, Georgia and Camp Logan. He was a past commander of the Two Oaks American Legion Post and was a past president of the Last Man’s Club . He became a member of the Masonic Lodge many years ago and was also a member of the Associated Church.

A Republican, he was active in local, county and state politics.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett R. and Jennie (Ross) Ball, early residents of Hawarden, he was born in this city June 1, 1898.

He was graduated from Hawarden High School in 1912. He attended the University of Michigan and received his B.A. Degree at Ann Arbor in 1916. He then entered Northwestern University in Chicago and while a student there, he enlisted and served in World War I.

In 1920 he received his L.L. B. Degree at Northwestern University. The next two years Mr. Ball practiced law at Highmore, South Dakota and in 1922 came to Hawarden and practiced law here ever since.

He was married to Miss Helen Wells, a Hawarden High School instructor, at Lincoln, Nebraska, September 22, 1925. One son was born to this union.

Surviving are the widow and the son, Dick, a student at the University of Iowa. His parents and older brother Verne preceded him in death. Mrs. Ball’s sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. John Tucker, of Lincoln, Nebraska, came to Hawarden Tuesday.
