From the Rock Valley Bee, April 14, 1936:

Mrs. J. D. Scanlan received a letter from her sister, Mrs. Elias Smith, of Los Angeles, Calif., telling about the death of John Gebhardt, a former resident of this vicinity, who died at his home in Owensmouth, Calif. Mr. Gebhardt and family lived on a farm northwest of Rock Valley about 25 years ago, moving from here to California. The family will be remembered by the older residents of this vicinity.

The 1900 U.S. census for Rock Valley, Sioux County has John Gebhart, age 34, born in Iowa in August 1865, parents born in Germany, a farmer renting his farm, married 11 years; wife Louise, age 31, born in Iowa in September 1868, parents born in Germany, mother of 2 children, 2 living; daughters Mable, born May 1890, and Grace, born February 1895.

The 1910 U.S. census for Rock Township, Sioux County has John Gebhardt (45), born in Iowa, parents born in Germany, a farmer, owns his farm, married 21 years; wife Louisa (42), born in Iowa, parents born in Germany, mother of 2 children, 2 living; daughter Mabel (19), born in Iowa, a bookkeeper at a bank; daughter Grace (14), born in Iowa; a niece and nephew, Adabell (17) and Ray (13) Sebree[?]; and a farmhand, Arthur Orppen[?] (24). News notes in the Rock Valley Bee indicate he moved to California early in 1911.

The 1920 U.S. census for Los Angeles, California has John (55) and Louisa A. (52) Gebhardt farming (owning their farm) in Assembly District 61. They are still living in Los Angeles in 1930, where he is now the proprietor of a furniture store.
