Ed Van Gorkom Called Beyond

Ed Van Gorkom, fourth oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. C. Van Gorkom of Maurice, 32 years of age, died at his home at 1921 Mount Vernon avenue SE, at Cedar Rapids, last Thursday, March 5, of a heart attack. He had been in ill health for some time. Mr. Van Gorkom was employed by the Cedar Rapids Paper Box company.

He was born at Maurice, November 30, 1903, and had lived at Cedar Rapids since 1923. He was married to Miss Hazel Stewart of Marion in 1931 [FindaGrave adds Sept. 4], was a member of First Christian church, Mount Hermon Masonic lodge and Apollo Commandery.

Surviving in addition to his widow and parents are three brothers, John of Des Moines, Marinus and Lester of Maurice; and three sisters, Mrs. Albert Nagel of Sioux City; Mrs. Clarence Singer of Remsen and Mrs. Clarence Sinkey of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held at Marion on Sunday at 3 p.m. and burial was at Cedar Memorial cemetery, the services in charge of Rev. J. R. McCullough of Westminster Presbyterian church.

Vernon Ave., Cedar Rapids, Iowa; resident of Cedar Rapids 13 years; born November 5[sic], 1903 in Maurice, Iowa; father Corneilous Van Gorkom, born in Pella, Iowa; mother Gezina Warntjes, born in Holland; wife Hazel Stewart Van Gorkom; occupation, printer in a print shop, 13 years in this occupation, last worked 1934; died at 2:30 p.m. March 5, 1936; cause of death, cerebral tumor, onset 3/3/36; buried in Cedar Memorial Park. An annotation says “(over),” but the reverse side is not present for the online copy.

His FindaGrave.com page has him as Edward Cornelius Van Gorkom and his birth date as 30 Nov 1903; buried in Cedar Memorial Park, Cedar Rapids; parents Cornelius Van Gorkom (1868-1956) and Gesiena Van Gorkom (1873-1943); wife Hazel Viola Stewart Wilson (1906-2000).

His parents appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index with their surname spelled Van Gorkum.
