Mr. Henry Kiers, age 88, of Sheldon, formerly of Hull, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2019, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, December 23, at 1:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. The Rev. Paul Van Maaren will officiate. Following a time of fellowship, interment will take place at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Henry was born on October 9, 1931, the son of John and Fenni (Moes) Kiers. He was born and raised in Hull where he graduated from the Hull Christian School and Western Christian High School. He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church. Henry’s first job was as a welder at Kooiker Mfg. before he became a TV service technician at Sipma Electric in Rock Valley.

On September 20, 1957, he married the love of his life, Lila Ann Klein, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. His dream of starting an electronics business came about in September of 1958 when Henry and Lila started the Radio & TV Center in Hull. In 1972, they also opened a Christian Bookstore and electronics sales and service business in Sheldon. In 2008, they retired, and their sons continued to run the family’s electronics business.

Henry was always proud to represent his small hometown of Hull, he served on the Hull City Council, participated in the Hull business and professional clubs, and was a member of the Western Christian High School Board, acting as chairman of the gym building committee. He also volunteered in various community and church activities. Henry enjoyed singing in the church choirs and he served as a deacon and an elder.

Some of his favorite parts of his day included getting the red van out on the road to do service calls, whether it was for a TV repair or antenna work and taking his grandchildren for doughnuts and coffee. He loved to visit with his customers and friends over coffee.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lila; three children, Rick (Eleanor) Kiers, of Hull; Martin Kiers, of Hull; and Lisa (Todd) Merley, of Ashton; six grandchildren, Cody (Shelby) Kiers, Kelly (Brian) Sipma, Jerad (Emma) Kiers, Mitchell (Jennifer) Kiers, Logan Merley, and Lexie Merley; and five great-grandchildren, Teagan, Easton, and Emerson Sipma, and Isabelle and Abigail Kiers.

In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by a sister, Gertrude Zevenbergen; a brother-in-law, Clyde Klein; and a sister-in-law, Lois Klein.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
