From the Sioux Center News, December 5, 1935:

PIONEER RESIDENT OF BOYDEN DIES

Mrs. Adrianna Verrips, 78, of Boyden, died Tuesday after an illness of three weeks. She was the widow of Anthony Verrips who died seven years ago. Mrs. Verrips was born in Pella, Ia, 78 years ago and came to Sioux County 53 years ago having lived at Boyden since that time.

Survivors are: Mrs. Ella Goodyear and Mrs. Nettie Smith of Boyden; Mrs. Chris Rowenhorst, Monroe, S.D.; and Cornelius. One son died 17 years ago.

The funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at the Reformed Church of Boyden with Rev. J. W. Brink Officiating.

MRS. A. VERRIPS

Funeral services for Mrs. A. Verrips, who died as the result of a paralytic stroke, will be held on Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the home, and at 1:30 o’clock at the First Reformed Church.

MRS. VERRIPS

Mrs. A. Verrips died at the age of 79 years, on December 4, 1935. She came here from Pella, at the age of 25 years, her maiden name being Adrianna VanSteenbergen, and has been a resident of Boyden for fifty-three years. She married Anthony Verrips in February 1881. To this union were born six children: Mrs. Chris Rouwenhorst, of Monroe, S.D.; Cornelius Verrips, of Sheldon; Mrs. Elmer Goodyear, Mrs. Nettie Smith, and Mrs. Ralph Smit, of Boyden; and 25 grand-children and one great grand-child. [yes, only 5 children were listed]

From the Alton Democrat, December 14, 1935, p. 4, Boyden news:

p. 3 – The funeral of Mrs. A. Verrips was held Friday afternoon at the Reformed church at 1:30. Deceased was a resident of this town and community for many years. While her health had not been good for a long time, she was confined to her room only a few days. All her children were privileged to be near her during this time. The children are Mrs. Ring Smit, Mrs. Elmer Goodyear, Mrs. Nettie Smith and Kelly Verrips all of Boyden, and Mrs. C. Rowenhorst of Monroe, S.D.

p. 4 – Another brief news note about her funeral. Gives the residence of her son Kelly as Sheldon, and one of her daughters as Mrs. Ralph Smit, Her husband passed on several years ago and a son, Arthur, died during the flu epidemic of 1919. Her six grandsons, Anthony and Roy Smit, Joe Fihr, Howard Verrips, Roger Smit and Lloyd Goodyear, acted as pallbearers. Interment was at the Boyden cemetery.

Her death certificate spells ner forename Adriana and adds her birth date, April 16, 1857 in Pella; parents Cornelius Van Steenbergen and Hermina Verrips, both born in the Netherlands; resident of Boyden 53 years; died at 12:30 a.m. December 4, 1935; cause, cerebral hemorrhage and arteriosclerosis.

Her FindaGrave.com page spells her name Adrianna, with a photo of her headstone. Parents Cornelis Van Steenbergen (1806-1888) and Hermina De Bruijn Van Steenbergen (1816-1891). Two siblings are listed: Leendert Van Steenbergen (1842-1905) and Mary Van Steenbergen Van Gorp (1855-1934). Spouse, Anthony Verrips (1856-1928). Four children listed: Arthur Verrips (1885-1919), Minnie Verrips Smit (1887-1966), Dora Verrips Goodyear (1894-1967), Jennette Antonette Verrips De Jong (1898-1990).

The Marion County marriage register for 1882/1883 has groom Antony Verrips, age 27[?], resident of Lake Prairie, a farmer, born in Lake Prairie Township, parents Aart Verrips and Van Ass; bride Jennie van Steenbergen, age 25[?], resident of Lake Prairie Township, born in Lake Prairie, parents Cornelus Van Steenbergen and Hermina de Bruin; married at Pella, February 23, 1883.
