From the Sioux Center News, October 10, 1935:

Dingeman Den Hartog died at his home Saturday morning at 7:30 at the age of 52 years. "Dim" had been ailing for months. Two weeks ago he started his weekly Carmel news with "Well Folks, here I am again. Thankful to be able to write a few lines. I am not sick, neither am I well. The Doc ordered me to bed. He said, 'You've got to have a rest,' so all there is to it is to obey. So we hope that rest may help and that we may be able to be up and around again soon."

He did try to rest but was too restless to stay entirely quiet. He was up around the house a few days later and on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28, he suffered a stroke. From then until he passed away to his final rest he never completely regained consciousness, although a flicker of recognition would appear in his eyes and he nodded his head when some friend came near his bed. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, with services at the house and at the Carmel church. Rev. Wm Rottschaefer officiated.

"Dim" was born 52 years ago, Feb. 16, 1883 on a farm near Middleburg. On Jan. 7, 1909 he married Antonette Kuyper of Boyden and they spent their first year on a farm near Boyden. They then moved to Carmel and farmed there for nine years returning for one year to Boyden, then coming to Sioux Center where they lived until 1925. In 1926 they moved to Albert Lea, Minn., and after three years moved to the farm near Carmel where they are still living.

Mr. and Mrs. Den Hartog were blessed with eight living children: Mrs. Ernest Mulder, Hatfield, Minn.; Mrs. Henry Schenk, Mrs. Esther Warntjes of Boyden; Gysbert, Pershing, Nelvina, Leona, and Marlyn. David Anthony died at the age of five days in 1928. There are also two grandchildren, Christina Schenk and Yvonne Mulder. Six brothers and five sisters also survive: Mrs. Maggie Tolsma and Edward of Sanborn; Dick of Orange City; Mrs. Anna Riemersma, John and Walter of Hospers; Mrs. Jane Slothouber, Mrs. Nellie Scholten, and Mrs. Gert De Graaf of Alton; Herman of Larabee and James of Sheldon.

Dingeman Den Hartog, prominent farmer of the Carmel vicinity, died Saturday, October 5, after suffering a stroke a few days previously. He had not been in good health for some time, but was up and about until a week before his death.

Born on a farm near Middleburg on Feb. 16, 1883, he was 52 years and eight months of age when he passed on. At the age of 25 years he married Miss Nettie Kuyper of Boyden. The couple lived in the Boyden vicinity for nine years, then to Sioux Center for five years and to Albert Lea, Minnesota, where they lived for 3 years. For the past nine years they have lived at Carmel.

Nine children were born to the couple of whom three are married, namely Annie, Mrs. Earnest Mulder of Hatfield, Minn.; Helen, Mrs. Henry Schenk of Sioux Center; and Esther, Mrs. Walter Warntjes, Boyden. Mr. Den Hartog was active in farm organizations and a man of influence in his community. He had decided opinions on all matters relating to farm conditions, was not afraid to voice them. His judgment was held in respect and his friendship valued.

Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Den Hartog celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

The Carmel church was filled to overflowing at the services Tuesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Rottschaefer, the pastor, and Rev. Vos. A quartet sang two beautiful songs. [Followed by a list of those from Alton who attended the services.]
